Helpline God

According to Dr. Veerendra Heggade, Dharmadhikari of the famous temple of Karnataka, Shree Kshetra Dharmasthala,” Normally we get 10,000 visitors a day, but this year it has crossed well beyond that. On holidays also the number has gone beyond 15,000. We get a large numbers of youngsters, mostly from Bengaluru. Even though the roads to Dharmasthala are in pathetic condition they still come."

Across India, the story is the same. Sure, the fact that Indians-particularly the youngsters-are becoming more spiritual is not a new revelation. But even the most optimistic priest would not have expected the sudden surge in ‘seekers’. Gloom times really do mean boom times for interlocutors of God. And they need not necessarily be priests, spiritual gurus or your friendly neighborhood shoulder for you to cry on. It could even be the ubiquitous astrologer who is sought after even in the best of times.

And yes, astrolgers are having a blast Amritlal, a Kolkatta based astro-palmist, also owns a TV Channel, Fortune. These are not bad times for him. “People come here to get direction to sort out their problems. People basically want to live in a better condition and seek our help. Those who have lost their jobs due to economic recession, take our opinion. They want to know how soon they can get a job or how to live better”, says Amritlal. Earning close to half a million a month is now a piece of cake for him.

A famous astrologer in Kochi named A.P.Jayasankar, told TSI "there is sharp increase in the customers during the last three months. Most of the customers are youngsters and because of my academic interest, after talking to them I came to know that they are visiting an astrologer first time in their life. Of course 90 percent of them have religious background in their family, but interesting thing is that youngsters from Christian and Muslim communities also come to get my advice." Like humanity-even bad times doesn’t discriminate between religions.

The irony is, bad times lead even successful people to start believing in both the spiritual and the supernatural. There is the case of a Kolkatta based businessman who has resorted to God, astrology and blaming the meltdown for the sudden reversal in his fortunes. Facing a livelihood threatening bite of the bad times, Mr. S. P. Agarwal, a Marwari businessman in Kolkata, has taken the help of Astro-Palmist Amritlal. Mr Agarwal is in the real estate business and the market shrinkage has left his investments blocked. Even the decorative luxury flats he has constructed on a prime piece of real estate beside the river Ganges has failed to attract any buyers. Same is the fate of his other five projects in and around Kolkata, which are either completed or near-completion-but without any takers. Apart from that, this entrepreneur has suffered huge losses in the stock market which has virtually shattered his financial foundations. Mr Agarwal told TSI, “Why do you call it slowdown? Don’t you think it’s a crash? Crash of American economic system? Can you tell us where shall we go?” However, he believes, he is passing ‘through a bad time due to ill-placement of stars’. Agarwal is not the only businessman-Marwari or not-who is talking like that these days.
