Development could change agenda in virgin Tharpakar

Deflowering a desert

Hasan believes that Pathan workers from Hazara, Mansehra, Kohat and Bannu will be employed by entrepreneurs for coal mining. He pointed out that Christian and Ahmedi missionaries are already there and with development, Muslim missionaries will turn to Tharparkar. “With road network granite mining will become easy and lucrative,'' says Hasan.

Tharparkar boasts of a lot of heritage. So far, it has been well protected because there are no roads. But with bustling development and a road network, tourists have started coming to the desert and land is already being sold along the roads. “If zoning bylaws are not made, entire Thar, especially its heritage will be ruined,” warns Hasan. According to him, people are already walking away from archeological sites for constructing their homes.

The Nagarparkar Taluka - with a 57.03 Hindu population in 2008 - is different from the rest of the desert. ``It contains scenic granite mountains, exquisite heritage sites, unexcavated archaeological remains, beautiful folk and vernacular architecture, places of Hindu pilgrimage and rituals, and sites of Sindhi folklore. The rich heritage and scenic sites, along with a tolerant multi-religious culture, has been protected in a fossilized manner due to the inaccessibility of the Taluka. Until recently (2004), there was no proper road into the Taluka settlements. Fossilization has also meant deterioration in the built-environment, heritage sites and in socio-economic terms,” Hasan said.

Local population naturally harbours fears. “Coal mining will destroy our agricultural land and our environment. There is electricity at half a mile from our village where experiments for coal mining have been conducted by the Chinese and Pakistani geologists, but there is no electricity here,” said Nazir Ahmed, a shopkeeper in Thario Halephota village.

Haji Qayyum, 65, Pesh Imam in the village mosque is bitter: “I have never witnessed any Hindu-Muslim riots in Tharparkar in my life. But when labour will come from outside there will be in-fight over wages,” he said. A real cause of worry in an ocean of tranqulity so far.

This is a virtual war!

Arjun Munda & Subodh K Sahay : Jharkhand

In Jharkhand there's a virtual war going on – a website war! First, former chief minister and BJP’s Jamshedpur candidate, Arjun Munda, hit cyberspace with his glittering profile, achievements, aspirations and what not. Then came Union Minister Subodh Kant Sahay, the Congress candidate from Ranchi, who took this up as a challenge in a bid to oubid the savvy Munda. But if life is a bed of roses just now, it is only for the state's web designers, who are suddenly in great demand. Surely if no one else votes for the two, they certainly will! Any more takers Mr Munda and Mr Sahay?

UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN...

KABIR BEDI SHARES WITH TSI HIS HOLIDAYING EXPERIENCES IN THE PLACE HE IS MORE FAMOUS THAN ANYWHERE ELSE – ITALY!

One doesn’t have to think much to travel around Europe. Just rent a car, go online and do some good research and one is sure to fi nd great deals. Toward the north of Rome is a place called Tuscany, which is one of the most beautiful places in Italy. If you’re driving, it really doesn’t matter where you go because you’ll always be driving through the most beautiful medieval villages and picturesque bounds with lots of character. In Tuscany, my friend and I had chosen to go to a place called Saturnia, which has the most fabulous natural hot springs pouring down like a water fall and almost running down like a river. One can just sit there or even bathe. It’s also therapeutic and is a wonderful experience. One can visit this place at any time of the year.

In such regions, there are lovely guest houses, and agro-tourism is one of its attractions. Th ere were plenty of beautiful and inexpensive places to stay there. We stayed in a beautiful guest house, which was done up well and was surprisingly cheap. It was located right next to the vineyard and was beautiful.

It is called Aqua-viva, which is a private vineyard. And the nearest town from there is Grosseto, which is also like these towns built on a hill with a medieval character. It’s like a historical landscape around the countryside. One could just go and enjoy at the hot springs there for as long as one wants. I don’t clearly remember the cost of the stay but I think it was about $100-150 a day, and that too for the deluxe accommodation in that area. It had all facilities like hot water etc., and it was in an exquisite location. One can also easily fi nd medieval style of guest houses for $30-40.

Th en there were these Italian restaurants everywhere. Th e food was delicious and at reasonable prices. It was really one of the greatest pleasures in the world. All I remember doing is drinking a lot of wine at the restaurants dotting the road. I am fairly well-known in Italy.

So, even while I was on a vacation and wanted to be on my own, when I went out during the day, I had to be nice to everybody and get pictures clicked with the people around. However, I also managed to have my own private time and the trip did turn out to be a magical experience since I mainly chose to be out in the middle of the night when there were hardly any locals, to get my own private magical time. Now about India, I love the Himalayas. Goa is also a beautiful place. A budget vacation in Goa is absolutely possible. One could go to the north of Calangute, to the Anjuna beach or go to Morjim or to the Montego Bay Beach Village Resort.

Here, rooms are available at about Rs 2000-3000 per day.

Th ere are also hundreds of little restaurants and it is a perfect place to go for a lowcost holiday. When I go to Goa, I just like to bathe in the sea.

Th e best memory I have in Goa is of an exciting parasailing experience!

Barring Tamil Nadu and Andhra, why film stars usually fail in politics...

Khao Aur Khilao budget by Arindam Chaudhuri
Shahrukh khan to Host IIPM 4Ps Annual Business and Marketing Quiz
2,300 IIPM students get jobs

Celluloid Pied Pipers

On the face of it, there is no doubt that film stars project their charisma and popularity even onto the electoral arena. In fact, if you look at the South, four people intimately involved with movies have become chief ministers. They are MGR, Karunanidhi and Jayalalithaa in Tamil Nadu and NTR in Andhra Pradesh. And don’t be surprised if the Telugu super star Chiranjeevi joins that list in the near future. If Indian democracy can be called a functional anarchy, then surely this breed can be called pseudo Pied Pipers!

Many pundits also contend that this habit of film stars winning effortlessly is a reflection of how immature our democracy still is; that it reveals how voters get swayed more by fantasy than reality. To an extent, this is true. But as a lawyer might argue, it is not the whole truth! Barring the late Sunil Dutt, no personality from Bollywood has commanded stature, respect and recognition as a ‘serious’ politician. Amitabh quit politics in disgust; Rajesh Khanna faded away, as did the TV stars who acted in the serials Mahabharata and Ramayana. Govinda seems to have gone back to David Dhawan, and there are posters in Bikaner that announce an ‘award’ for missing local MP Dharmendra. And we all know what the Supreme Court did with the dreams of Sunjay Dutt.

Remember that dictum about how you can't fool all the people all the time? Well something similar has happened with the other gods in the Indian celebrity pantheon – star cricketers. Read this interesting package for celebrities’ incongruous, and often unsuccessful, love affair with electoral politics.

Pathiramanal - Bliss afloat

Khao Aur Khilao budget by Arindam Chaudhuri

2,300 IIPM students get jobs

If Kerala is God’s own country, Pathiramanal must be His private lair.

An island – but not off the mainland – Pathiramanal is a holidayer’s floating paradise in the middle of the lush backwaters called Vembanadu Lake, the largest among 20 lakes in Kerala. The blue awning above, and endless green arches of vegetation and softly gurgling waters around you, here is Ayurveda for the soul!

Home to more than 90 local and 50 migratory bird species, Pathiramanal – meaning sands of the night – is a cornucopia of biodiversity. With access possible only by boat, you would have left the rush hour and the expressways light years behind. Visitors can drift over the vast Lake in motor boats, or speedboats, or even houseboats with five-star luxury facilities (not for the budget travellers, though!) Incidentally, a bid by big tourist and resort operators to occupy this scenic property was thwarted, thanks to vehement protests by environmentalists. Devoid of the trappings of commercialisation that have ravaged many a lovely locale, the island remains as exquisite as creation must have originally conjured it. The Muhamma Grama Panchayat however – under whose jurisdiction is the island – is planning a bio-park, a butterfly park, bird-watching facility and an aquarium with the help of the central and state governments.

While the myriad flora and fauna are a naturalist’s delight, the canals around Pathiramanal complete the picture of romantic idyll. There is sweet water to be found on the island, even though the Lake itself is salty! While other favourite tourist haunts like the Kumarakam bird sanctuary at Kottayam, the Mattanchery beach and the ancient Jewish Synagogue are close at hand, yet this Edenesque island is not some place you’d wish to leave soon...

It’s about meeting people.. The financial aspect has ruined much of tourism…

Khao Aur Khilao budget by Arindam Chaudhuri
Shahrukh khan to Host IIPM 4Ps Annual Business and Marketing Quiz
2,300 IIPM students get jobs

RYP on whether you’d be sorry or safe with…

Touts

There is a rule of thumb – never deal with people who approach you; always approach people yourself. What I’ve found is that if you deal with a stranger at an airport or a bus station, you say, ‘excuse me, could you recommend a hotel’ or ‘could you tell me how much a taxi should cost’, you could never be steered wrong… Touts walk up to you with a book full of pictures and cards and they make their money by taking your money, and that’s not what it’s about. It’s about meeting people.. The financial aspect has ruined much of tourism…

Taxis

Taxis are horrible, though I shouldn’t say that for I’ve met many good taxi drivers, but once again, the tourism industry has to get your money, and get you out of there as quickly as possible, and get on to the next one…

Always spend your first night in a hotel, so you get rested up etc. But call the hotel and ask them how you should get from the airport; don’t just show up, and jump into a taxi. That’s when you’re most vulnerable, when you get off the plane and you have all your possessions with you.

Water

That’s simple: you should never drink water; you should drink beer! (laughs)

Lot of people drink bottled water, because they think it’s safe, but all that is done is fill up these plastic bottles and seal the caps back on... I’ve a very interesting thing – I’ve a small filtration canteen, with a built in ceramic filter, and therefore I could take my water from anywhere, for brushing, drinking etc…

Homestays

I like them because you can get a much better feel about a country; you can talk politics and understand what’s going on, instead of just talking to a waiter, or a bellman…. Carrying weapons for self-defence?

You cannot be aggressive in foreign country. Let’s say five men attack you, and you stab one of them; within 30 seconds, you’ve become the aggressor and the other person, the victim. The neighbours then come around and say, ‘you beat up the poor man!’ It’s happened to me in Africa. People tried to rob me and I thumped one of them and people questioned me. He actually didn’t get to steal anything, so it looks like I just walked up to him and started beating him up!

It’s not advisable to carry a knife or an identifiable weapon, but I do recommend carrying objects or devices that can hurt, but if you’re searched by the police, they don’t look like weapons. For example, I always carry a Mont Blanc pen refill, which is a thin sharp metal weapon.

Satyam scam: Nationalise and own

Khao Aur Khilao budget by Arindam Chaudhuri
Shahrukh khan to Host IIPM 4Ps Annual Business and Marketing Quiz
2,300 IIPM students get jobs

Even American economists now say government must own bailed out companies

Dr Rajendra Sachar

Chief Justice (Retd.) Delhi High Court

The Satyam scandal, which has been described by our Prime Minister as a “blot on our corporate image”, gets murkier every day. The larger question is, when a private management has indisputably defrauded and cheated the company, is the effort of the government to bail it out by pumping money into it the correct response? More especially, can this be done ignoring the mandate of Article 39 of the Constitution? The Article says that the state shall direct its policy towards securing that the operation of the economic system does not result in the concentration of wealth and means of production to the common detriment. The government is trying to find an alternative private investor who would be given favourable terms, including bank facilities, to run it. The persistent query from the poor is, why should the Centre hesitate to follow the path of nationalisation, which it did in 1974 when private managements squandered many prosperous textile mills?

On the contrary, by nationalising Satyam, the state can generate confidence in foreign buyers and suppliers on the prospect of Satyam’s revival. And takeover will not be prohibitively costly. It can be done by following the legally accepted principle of paying compensation to the existing shareholders on the net worth of Satyam, which in accountancy terms means paid-up capital plus free reserves. It is no secret that currently the net worth of Satyam is minimal. Though one may fully sympathise with some innocent small shareholders, but in free enterprise and a speculative economy, they must take the bad along with the good.

By virtue of nationalisation, every liability (other than the liability specifically accepted by Central government) will only be that of the old company and shall be enforceable against them, that is, the Raju family.

State takeover is not revolutionary. It has been successful in the past. The benefit will be that immediately after takeover, Satyam will be discharged from any obligation of mortgage and all other encumbrances created by old management, with the result that all attachments, injunctions, decrees or orders of any court restricting the use of such property in any manner shall be deemed to have been withdrawn.

Shocking… as always!

Two years after Anna Nicole Smith's death from a prescription medication overdose, her boyfriend Howard Stern and two doctors are being accused of conspiring to provide her thousands of prescription drugs in the years preceding her demise. Stern had also contested paternity to her child, who stood to inherit all her fortune, but backed off when DNA results proved the father to be Smith’s ex-boyfriend! As always, it’s all about the money of course.

Terror groups use movie piracy as funding source

Khao Aur Khilao budget by Arindam Chaudhuri
Shahrukh khan to Host IIPM 4Ps Annual Business and Marketing Quiz
2,300 IIPM students get jobs

Bloodstained business

Studies estimate that developing a pirated DVD in south Asian countries costs less than 70 cents and can be sold in developed countries for around $10. Not only developing a pirated DVD is relatively safer and cheaper, even the transfer and transport is equally easy. Most of the time, pirated materials are transferred through Internet. The Canadian groups sell and transfer large amounts of pirated DVDs ripped from Canadian theatres to overseas markets via Internet. The industries get more lucrative not just because of the returns it offers but also because of the risk factor. For example, in France, transacting in counterfeit products (includes pirated DVDs) is punishable by just two-year imprisonment and a fine of $0.19 million, while selling drugs is punishable by a 10-year imprisonment along with a fine of $9.5 million! Moreover, the rate of conviction for piracy is lower as compared to that of smuggling drugs and similar products. In 2002-03, merely 134 criminals were convicted of piracy while smuggling of drugs pushed around 1.5 million criminals behind the bars in the US alone. This whole modus operandi is equally spread across the globe. Groups like Ang Bin Hoey triad of Malaysia, Yi Ging in the US, Camorra in Italy, San Yee On in Hong Kong, Tepito in Mexico, Yakuza in Japan, to name a few, are quite active in movie piracy.

Every time one buys a pirated DVD, in order to save money, one might actually be unknowingly helping terror groups like Al Qaeda in purchasing weapons. The whole business of piracy will not stop with just government efforts but may if people stop buying pirated commodities, if not for the sake of industry than at least for the sake of the fight against global terror which has already created much mayhem.

The so-called return to religion is nothing but a kind of business of false hopes

Maulana

Wahiduddin Khan

President, Islamic Centre,

New Delhi

The modern man is witnessing a new phenomenon – termed by an American magazine as “return to religion”. We find every place of worship – cutting across religions – crowded with men and women. This is true of all countries. Now the question is, how does one explain this phenomenon? For sadly, the true spirit of religion is missing everywhere. Love, tolerance, peace, honesty and other human values, which form the inner content of religion, are virtually non-existent.

In this “return of religion”, form rules over the spirit – and thus it calls for a deeper analysis. To illustrate this point, I would like to refer to an experience. Once I happened to meet a Japanese journalist. During our meeting, I remember telling him that his country was among the most developed of all. But he did not seem very happy with this remark. When I asked him the reason, he said in a sad tone: “The so-called developed culture of Japan is nothing but a merchant culture. You know, man is more than material stuff. And as you know, merchant culture alone cannot make a man happy.”

It is indeed a fact that the modern man has failed to achieve happiness. He lives in constant tension. Civilisational progress and material comforts have failed to address man’s inner needs. Happiness is man’s dominant pursuit; but this urge remains unfulfilled today.

Narendra Modi : Gujarat

KHAM with a difference

Gujarat chief minister and strongman Narendra Modi is reportedly trying to rework an old caste alliance with predictable modifications. While experts believe that umbrella political alliances like KHAM (Kshatriya-Harijan-Adivasi-Muslim) are a thing of the past, Modi - after dropping the `M’ quotient - has allotted Lok Sabha tickets to Koli, Thakor (Khsatriya) and tribal leaders from Congress. The KHA is certainly in place. In doing so, he has dropped 16 sitting MP’s.We don't know where the 'sitting' leaders are running.

Helpline God

According to Dr. Veerendra Heggade, Dharmadhikari of the famous temple of Karnataka, Shree Kshetra Dharmasthala,” Normally we get 10,000 visitors a day, but this year it has crossed well beyond that. On holidays also the number has gone beyond 15,000. We get a large numbers of youngsters, mostly from Bengaluru. Even though the roads to Dharmasthala are in pathetic condition they still come."

Across India, the story is the same. Sure, the fact that Indians-particularly the youngsters-are becoming more spiritual is not a new revelation. But even the most optimistic priest would not have expected the sudden surge in ‘seekers’. Gloom times really do mean boom times for interlocutors of God. And they need not necessarily be priests, spiritual gurus or your friendly neighborhood shoulder for you to cry on. It could even be the ubiquitous astrologer who is sought after even in the best of times.

And yes, astrolgers are having a blast Amritlal, a Kolkatta based astro-palmist, also owns a TV Channel, Fortune. These are not bad times for him. “People come here to get direction to sort out their problems. People basically want to live in a better condition and seek our help. Those who have lost their jobs due to economic recession, take our opinion. They want to know how soon they can get a job or how to live better”, says Amritlal. Earning close to half a million a month is now a piece of cake for him.

A famous astrologer in Kochi named A.P.Jayasankar, told TSI "there is sharp increase in the customers during the last three months. Most of the customers are youngsters and because of my academic interest, after talking to them I came to know that they are visiting an astrologer first time in their life. Of course 90 percent of them have religious background in their family, but interesting thing is that youngsters from Christian and Muslim communities also come to get my advice." Like humanity-even bad times doesn’t discriminate between religions.

The irony is, bad times lead even successful people to start believing in both the spiritual and the supernatural. There is the case of a Kolkatta based businessman who has resorted to God, astrology and blaming the meltdown for the sudden reversal in his fortunes. Facing a livelihood threatening bite of the bad times, Mr. S. P. Agarwal, a Marwari businessman in Kolkata, has taken the help of Astro-Palmist Amritlal. Mr Agarwal is in the real estate business and the market shrinkage has left his investments blocked. Even the decorative luxury flats he has constructed on a prime piece of real estate beside the river Ganges has failed to attract any buyers. Same is the fate of his other five projects in and around Kolkata, which are either completed or near-completion-but without any takers. Apart from that, this entrepreneur has suffered huge losses in the stock market which has virtually shattered his financial foundations. Mr Agarwal told TSI, “Why do you call it slowdown? Don’t you think it’s a crash? Crash of American economic system? Can you tell us where shall we go?” However, he believes, he is passing ‘through a bad time due to ill-placement of stars’. Agarwal is not the only businessman-Marwari or not-who is talking like that these days.

Life & Times of Mani Shankar Aiyar

Khao Aur Khilao budget by Arindam Chaudhuri
Shahrukh khan to Host IIPM 4Ps Annual Business and Marketing Quiz

`A Time of Transition: Rajiv Gandhi to the 21st Century’ (Published by Penguin/Viking)

As Columnist for the "Indian Express" between 1996-2004, Panchayati Raj minister, Mani Shankar Aiyar, did what he does best, churn out candid columns on subjects close to his heart. His collection of offerings published on the edit page of India’s feisty newspaper, now compiled into a book, provides a ringside view of what happened in the country in that turbulent decade, where new political and economic mores were discarding well known Nehruvian positions on secularism, socialism, foreign affairs and democracy, opting instead for a global economic and political order, the quest for which continues.

Unlike most politicians, Aiyar combines the knowledge of someone who understands politics through the government and then later, through mass politics. Politics to him did not come the way it does to the average Indian politician: either through the dusty corridors of university life or through inheritance. It came through close association with Rajiv Gandhi, who after the Congress’s largest-ever electoral victory in 1984, was looking for bright, young men to enter politics and to break the stranglehold of party satraps. Among those handpicked was Mani Shankar Aiyar.

Aiyar – a dyed-in-the-wool Nehruvian – makes no bones about his commitment for Rajiv Gandhi, as "boss, mentor and friend", and the ultimate arbiter of India’s neo-Panchayat policy. Rajiv, according to him, once remarked that while we were the world’s largest democracy, we were also the least representative, a mere 5000 legislators representing the interests of a billion people. Rajiv “was deeply persuaded that if democracy in Delhi and state capitals had made India the world’s largest democracy, it was largely because there was constitutional sanction for such democracy; and if it had failed to develop at the grassroots, this was primarily because Panchayati Raj found no mention in the Constitution as originally framed, apart from a passing mention in the Directive Principles of State Policy. He therefore set about according constitutional status, sanctity and sanction to Panchayati Raj.’’

The results? According to the author, the devolution of power through panchayats has ushered in a social revolution without precedent. With 250,000 elected institutions of local self-government, 3.2 million elected members, 1.2 million elected women members (there are more elected women in India than the rest of the world put together), India is merely reaffirming that democracy flourishes on her soil like nowhere else.

Aiyar’s intellectual bandwidth is impressive. From peoples’ empowerment to the Union budget; India’s change in its foreign affairs asymmetry to the shenanigans of the Hindutva brigade; the perils of being L K Advani, Narendra Modi and Arun Shourie, all are but a day’s work for a man as erudite as him. “For the proponents of Hindutva, Hinduism is authentic, the rest an alien graft…An Indian culture is the Hindu culture, the persistence of other cultures being a tribute to the tolerance of the Hindu.”

If the scholarship is redoubtable, the language is typically Aiyar: his turn of phrase, vitriol, wit, the acidity and sometimes Aristotelian sweeps, are all from the hip and in-the-face. A number of heavyweight politicians who are now Aiyar’s esteemed colleagues in the UPA Cabinet, have been put to the sword. ’’

Virtually, no topic has been left untouched. What is missing, perhaps, is a contemporary account of what transpired behind the opening up of the Babri Masjid lock by Rajiv Gandhi. It certainly opened the locks for the BJP to march into South Block.

The US is sending feelers on concerns like Taliban

In an assessment likely to aid the atmosphere in West Asia and Caucasus, NATO and the United States agreed last week to recommence official ties with Russia and sent feelers to Iran in hopes of securing a bigger support for its Afghan military operation. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton held the country's first top-level meeting with Russia through the weekend since President Barack Obama took office in January, seeking to relieve strains and bag assistance over Afghanistan. Even though no key conclusions were reached in the meeting over dinner in Geneva, the Obama administration expects to perk up associations after a post-Cold War low throughout George W Bush's presidency. The administration has held it wishes to "press the reset button" and has fixed its focus on Eastern Europe missile defence, Afghanistan, nuclear non-proliferation and Iran as areas for potential progress. The Kremlin on its part says it is prepared to broaden collaboration, and Russian officials consider that if the Taliban is not restricted in Afghanistan, militancy could extend throughout former Soviet states in Central Asia and arrive at Russia.

The fresh White House line-up is noticeably eager to circumvent prime minister and former president, Vladimir Putin, and centre its negotiation with President Dmitry Medvedev. For any major change in the Russo-US understanding, Moscow would be resolute on the abandonment of Pentagon's missile shield plan in Poland and the Czech Republic and a complete brake over Ukraine and Georgia joining NATO.

In another sharp swivel from the preceding US administration, Barack Obama has said he wishes to engage Iran on multiple issues and a conference invite on that would be the beginning of an ambassadorial outreach to Tehran. Nonetheless, Washington remains at odds with Tehran, largely over its alleged nuclear agenda. "Tehran will be elated by this outreach, as it is in accordance with their wish and claim to be accepted by the Americans as a regional authority. Time and again, they have insisted that the Taliban issue can not be comprehensively resolved without their involvement,” said George Friedman, an Iran-US relation expert at Stratfor.

This shift might also re-establish a US-Iranian tie that snapped following Bush's vilification of the Islamic republic as a component of in the "axis of evil". Both nations are seen having a mutual interest in beating the Taliban – Iran and Shia’s age-old foe – and in restraining poppy production in Afghanistan.
