Mitchell, in the past, had led the peace initiative in Northern Ireland. Clinton also named former US Ambassador Richard Holbrooke, who negotiated the Dayton Accords to end Balkan Wars. Mitchell has been nominated as “special envoy”, while Holbrook bears the label “special representative”.

Currently, every major drug company is working on a drug to treat Alzheimer’s, and Wyeth having already invested more than $1 billion in the same, naturally gives Pfizer an automatic lead. Then there are other drugs that would fall into Pfizer’s basket through the deal, like Enbrel (an arthritis drug) that earned $3.8 billion in revenues for Wyeth during 2008, Prevnar (pediatric vaccine) that generated $3 billion in 2008, Xyntha (a hemophilia treating drug) that could help garner $1 billion in 2009. Naturally, it is revenues that entices Pfizer more! Commenting on the deal, David Lugg, Credit Analyst, S&P, quotes, “The company will reap the benefits of scale and be able to reduce costs. But revenues look more appealing a reason...” Credit Suisse also upgraded Pfizer’s stock status from “Neutral” to “Outperform” based on the merits of the deal. (In fact, Credit Suisse had long recommended a deal between the two.) In brief, the diversification that the deal grants Pfizer will make its $70 billion annual revenue expectations by 2012 appear more realistic. It is also to be noted, that Wyeth’s share price & MCap at present is at levels that can be easily compared to the lowest in the past half-a-decade. This would therefore directly imply that purchase at this moment would make it cheaper for Pfizer.

Two wars, none the smarter...

2008: In the early days after Lehman Brothers collapsed, there is much glee amongst many in Europe. Analysts and hacks point out how Europe has fostered a more ‘responsible’ model of capitalism while America has gone beyond the pale. In a parody that seems inconceivable now, European media praises banks for responsible lending and handling of assets.

That perverted euphoria lasts just a few days. Within a matter of days, it is revealed that toxic assets, bankruptcy, bad debts, collapse and contagion had as much to do with Europe as America. In fact, the ‘star’ economy of the continent Iceland, that had delivered blistering growth rates for a decade, became the first country to go completely bankrupt as a result of the meltdown. The government in Iceland has collapsed and protests have become the order of the day when people wake up from the numbing shock of seeing a ‘market’ disappear into oblivion.

Unlikely brokers take centre stage

In anticipation of its final triumph over Tamil rebels, Rajapakse has already announced a detailed plan of demilitarisation and a devolution package of powers to provinces. The three-decade-old war between the Sri Lankan armed forces and Tamil guerillas has claimed thousands of lives. Interestingly, in the scenario of international interlocutors playing a mediatory role between traditionally warring ethnic groups, the Lankan imbroglio has brought forward an unlikely peace broker – Japan.Its negotiator, Akashi, would try to “encourage their work on the process towards a political solution of the ethnic conflict.”

The initiative by Japan, an influential member of the Sri Lankan donor club is the first of its kind since January 2008, when Sri Lanka abrogated the 2002 cease fire brokered by Norwegians. Since then, Colombo has vowed to finish off the Tamil rebels once and for all.

If Gent’s strategy cup ran full of suicidal moves, Arun Sarin – who was on the Vodafone board since June 1999 (and was equally, if not more, to blame) and who took over from Gent in April 2000 – redefined the standard of how much shareholder value could ever be destroyed from a company. He sold the deal on the fact that the combined telecom giant would have a subscriber base of 53.8 million in the US! What he sweetly left out was the disaster the deal could be. At the time of the deal, the Sprint Nextel common stock was trading at $26.9; it’s at a sickening $8.30 today! While many shareholders got wiped out Mr. Gary Foresee was kicked out at the end of 2007. His severance package? $40 million!

MY: What actually is Corporate Social Responsibility?! It is something which started with the idea to help other people; but today, CSR has only become money to gain better public relations. You sponsor a cricket team, a rock concert, that’s CSR. The money goes to the R department and does not go to help poor people. CSR budget is now public relations money.

Of course, the final aspect to great faculty is communication skills; and most of the global B-school professors who teach at ISB have much better communication skills thanks to their larger corporate interactions and to the more competitive consulting environment in their B-schools, as well as to their natural advantage. Most IIM professors really score less compared to the ISB professors in this respect. In fact, if there are two other institutes that have professors with great communication skills, they are FMS in Delhi (having been a awe-struck student of the current dean, Dr. J. K. Mitra, and ex-deans of FMS – Dr. N. R. Chatterjee, Dr. M. P. Gupta & Dr. M. Adhikari – I can personally vouch for it) and XLRI in Jamshedpur. In this regard, I don’t even want to start speaking about IIPM faculty since they are by far superior, and that’s something that sets them – one and all – completely apart!

Thus, I want to conclude by saying that though the contact hours might be lesser, the exceptional track records of the faculty who teach at ISB make up for the lesser number of hours to a large extent; since in management, ten hours from a ‘great’ professor is worth far more than twenty hours from a ‘below average’ professor, and that difference cannot be made up by the affected students reading up a little extra. Of course, to a very limited extent, the fact that an average IIM student has about one year of work experience compared to the five years that an ISB student has, also places the ISB product in a slightly better position, wherein they can understand the same concepts from their professors through even a lesser number of contact hours.

B&E: What are the key strategic imperatives that you have formulated for Dabur? SD: I think our strategies rotate around how we maintain a class of growth both in revenue and profitability. We can not insulate economic reality so business will grow and ebb according to the market condition but our basic philosophy should be to deliver as good growth as is possible within the circumstances. So far we have been doing that very well, as we have grown larger and I think that is really the end result of our strategic implementation – world class products and world class processes. But to deliver this, we have to do lots of strategic thinking.

Similarly, Balsara was considered as the company''s portfolio in oral care was something Dabur felt it could create wealth with. There are segments that Dabur doesn''t feel it can do much with, like laundry, where the company would not wish to enter, even if the brand is lucrative enough.

The same goes for soaps, where Dabur had attempted an extension of the Vatika brand into the soap category, which they have exited as of now. A company spokesperson told us that it was done because they did not find the soaps category lucrative enough. The company was hoping for margins in the 40-45% category, but ended up receiving just around 20%, which they found quite unattractive. However, with Fem, they now have a separate brand that may help fuel their aspirations in soaps, but that would still count as a far-fetched thought as of now.
