But what he might realise more painfully is that today, religious extremism and intolerance in Pakistan is not confined to madrassas – or school – students. It also used madrassa students for its geopolitical interests in Afghanistan, but the strategy backfired.

Today, the State finds it extremely difficult to rein in Taliban and other jihadi forces in Pakistan’s Federally Administrated Tribal Areas (FATA) and other parts of the country because they are thoroughly brainwashed and are equipped with deadly weapons.
