But the company isn’t trying to make India a global agri-sourcing hub.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Next, PepsiCo also plans to develop an agri-hub (like ITC’s) for sourcing raw material for its snacks and juices ventures. In states like Punjab, it has already created fruit plantations. In fact, such initiatives have helped Nooyi to get hold of institutional buyers too (like UB Group’s contract to source 50% of its total annual requirement of barley). But the company isn’t trying to make India a global agri-sourcing hub. “We can’t meet the demand in India and we need to plant more trees for citrus-based fruits for our juices venture. So we don’t have the scope for export,” comments Sanjeev Chadha, CEO-Beverages, PepsiCo India.

One can also note that with an Indian origin CEO at the helm currently, this is a great time for Pepsi to strengthen its India connection. But more than that, the company realises that as competition gets fierce, it will have to take its goodwill hunting to a new level, both through Indianised products (with health written all over) and through CSR. High time for the ‘Youngistan’ brand to sober up and take up responsible profit making.

Religare Enterprises with a view to expand, diversify and introduce offerings benchmarked against global best practices

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

The background summary is that as an integrated financial services company [with its presence in brokerage, wealth management, insurance et al] , Religare Enterprise claims to be amongst the globally trusted brands in the financial services domain and to that effect, has also attempted to position itself as the ‘Investment Gateway of India.’ Be that as it may, a host of the other similarly positioned integrated financial companies are already competing against each other and the differentiating factor in the market will certainly be based on leadership parameters – be it in terms of cost, structure, product offering or access to capital. The clear question is, does Religare have the wherewithal on all, or even some, of these critical parameters? Religare Enterprises with a view to expand, diversify and introduce offerings benchmarked against global best practices, has entered into joint ventures with global majors. Creditably, this seems to be structurally stable – for example, their JV with Aegon is for asset management and life insurance businesses in India; for wealth management, their JV is with Australia based financial services major, Macquarie Bank; they’ve also partnered with Vistaar Entertainment to launch India’s first film fund.

But discreditably so, at this particular juncture in financial markets, an outright majority purchase of shares seems not only risky, but downright suicidal. At a time when the mutual fund industry is under tremendous stress, Religare’s intent to purchase the majority share in Lotus AMC has been termed a ‘distress sale’ for Lotus. I wonder, as I’ve mentioned it before, it almost seems a ‘distress buy’ for Religare itself. And why? Look at the figures yourself.

Religare Enterprise has been posting losses for the last two quarters consecutively. It’s not just the losses; but the fact is that even Religare’s share prices have plummeted uncontrollably in the meanwhile. If one considers the figures since January 2008, Religare’s stock price has almost halved from its peak of Rs 730 on January3, 2008 to Rs 325.30 on November 4, 2008. Interestingly – and very strangely – the announcement of the Lotus AMC takeover was seen in a neutral light by Religare Enterprise’s investors, with the stock continuing to languish in the same range, rather than plummeting further.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Ajeet Chauhan, VP – HR & Training, Nirula’s talks about how they have leveraged social networking platform in more than one way

How important are social networking websites for a business like Nirula’s?
Social networking websites have over the last two years gained a lot of prominence and we too are leveraging this platform in more than one way. Besides sponsoring groups and fan clubs for some of our products we are also exploiting this medium to create a positive ‘employer branding’ and attract the ‘right fit’ for the organisation via social networking websites like LinkedIn, Facebook or Orkut. But more interestingly we have done a bit of innovation here and used the basic tenets of these sites to develop an Employee Self Service (ESS) module. Most ESS fail just because of the low level of patronising by the end users. So based on the success of these social networking sites we are in the process of developing an ESS. This software will enable the employees to communicate P2P (peer-to-peer). It integrates every individual in the organisation into a larger ambit while giving the end user the flexibility and independence to have his own private space unique to him or her. It also allows them to choose from the various affiliations. So each individual will have his home page (like on an Orkut or Facebook) and can invite their peers and friends within the organisation to join their groups. We are going to use this as both the ESS and the Knowledge Management System (KMS) or putting in simply a cross between a Facebook and Wikipedia. Thus, this platform will not only be a networking site and ESS but a knowledge sharing point which will be a two and fro communication between the employees and the organisation. So, let’s say we have a new product, for instance a burger or pizza, its recipe will be uploaded and a notification can be sent to all in the relevant group. Thus employees from different geographical locations get updated instantaneously and in case they have something to add or share about that product they can do so in a similar manner like in the Wikipedia. The administrator, however, monitors, filters and controls the content.

Do you also use social networking websites to increase the popularity of your brand and products?
Yes, we do use social networking websites to our advantage. Today we have many communities and forums on some of our iconic and popular products like hot chocolate fudge on websites like Orkut. And it definitely pays off in increasing the popularity of both the brand Nirula’s and our products.

Does hiring through social networking websites make sense?
Yes, absolutely. The trend of employing people through print ads has changed a lot now which has moved towards the employee referral programme under which you refer a person and if that person is selected, you get paid in return. What works for an organisation is that if employees have their friends working in the same organisation then there is better ‘Stickiness’ amongst them and they tend to stay longer. This helps in reduction of attrition.

Do you believe that this trend will catch pace in times to come?
The growth of social networking websites is still in a relatively nascent stage in India and the trend of companies employing executives via social networking websites will catch pace in times to come. It is already a very popular medium in some parts of the world where the recruiters and the prospective job seekers are using their networks to get introduced. Online is the way to go in times to come and companies will surely realise the potential of this phenomenon!

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Situated on Rhoda Island, Grand Hyatt, Cairo, is a calm haven directly poised over the River Nile. The hotel enjoys the perfect location in the centre of business and commercial district of Cairo which makes it a stone's throw distance from Cairo’s many cultural and tourist attractions. The hotel that stands 142 metres is erected above a nine-story platform with open and private areas for a completely integrated facility.

The View: The hotel is located just 20 km from Cairo International Airport and is not far from where all the action lies. The views of the Nile and the nearby Pyramids from all the hotel's guest rooms and balconies as well as the hotel's restaurants are just spectacular, adding to the existing beauty of this magnificent hotel.

Archi Type: The marbled flooring throughout the hotel matches the magnificence of the hotel. The rooms overlooking the Nile have been designed keeping in mind that the view of the great river doesn’t get blocked. Also, the beautified rock arts, water-features throughout the hotel lobby make it look like nothing short of a palace.

Bon Appétit: Serving to cosmopolitan consumers, Grand Hyatt, Cairo, offers a spectacular range of international dining options. On the 41st floor of the hotel is the magnificent Revolving Restaurant. Getting the finest French cuisine, this restaurant is the perfect place to get a view of the Pyramids and the Nile. If in a mood to savour your meal on an outdoor terrace, the El Sakya overlooking the Nile on one side and levels of plantation on the other does serve you a good range of Japanese, Italian and Indian.

Around the Corner: Situated almost in the middle of the city, the Grand Hyatt is close to the Egyptian Museum displaying ‘Tutankhamen collection of treasures’. Also, not too far are the Pyramids of Giza and the Downtown Cairo which is the convenient location of many hotels, retail outlets, travel agencies and restaurants. The Hard Rock Café next to the hotel is definitely a must visit.

From Under the Carpet: The lobby is dimly lit, which makes you want to fall asleep. The restaurants, most of the times, are deserted due to the ‘no alcohol’ policy which the hotel follows. In Essence: If luxury is what you're looking at then the Grand Hyatt is just the place to park yourself. Not only does the hotel offer the best of services but the view from the hotel is also unmatchable.

"We view the global economic downturn as an opportunity..."

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Woody Nam, President & CEO, LG Electronics Asia talks about recession tactics in this exclusive with B&E

B&E: Given the weak global sentiment (US recession), how does LG view its role in India’s development vis-à-vis the ongoing slowdown? WN: In these challenging economic times, we expect a shift in consumer mindset including Indian consumer market – away from high priced, high premium goods and services, and toward products that make a lot of sense price-performance wise. Consumers want better-looking, more feature-rich devices that perform better, but not necessarily costing much more.

With our vast manufacturing and design resources, LG has the ability to make available a wide range of product categories catering to the premium, mid-range, and value markets. We actively involve our customers in product development and feature plans (customer insight-based products and services) that match with customer and market demands of ensuring a more endearing consumer experience, and wider availability of popular LG products across the states.

B&E: LG went for a global repositioning exercise in 2007- 2008. But of lately, the company has shifted its strategy from premium to lower end products in rural areas? What is the rationale behind this move? WN: LG has not shifted its strategy but rather, we view today’s global economic downturn as an opportunity to increase our brand visibility and sales momentum. LG has the ability to make available a wide range of product categories catering to the premium, mid-range, and value markets according to target market needs. The company expects a 45% contribution to its 2009 turnover from demand of entry level products in the rural areas. Sound macroeconomic initiatives previously undertaken by rural municipalities have seen economic growth outstripping that of urban centres. The resulting increase in disposable incomes and purchasing power has led to continued and healthy demand for consumer durables. LG aims to continue its market development focus in rural areas, and increasing revenue contribution from booming rural markets. In the higher-end and premium product segment, LG will continue to focus on key urban markets in India.

No frills... no thrills... just mounting bills!

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Subhiksha must adopt a franchise model, but first it needs money real fast!!!

The man behind FedEx, Fredrick Smith once famously said, “Fear of failure must never be a reason not to try something.” And it seems that R. Subramanian, MD, Subhiksha did follow that advice with sheer optimism and steadfast resolve. However, he isn’t exactly moving in the direction of Frederick Smith! Just a year back, both R. Subramanian and the Indian retail sector were considered to be on a high but as the global economy melted down, both of them followed suit. In a business like retail, where the balance between cash and inventory rules the roost, almost all the retailers present in the country are finding it tough to keep their bottom lines above water. But among all, Subhiksha has been amongst the worst casualties. Apart from delaying salaries of employees and not clearing its debtors, many news reports claim that the suppliers have stopped transactions with the retail chain, which the company has often denied. But now things seem to be getting out of hand.

The no frills retailer has been known for offering low cost products to the consumer but for the past few months, Subhiksha has lost a lot of ground to competitors, as it hasn’t been able to lure the customers due to the shortage of supply. “We are in pain but we are not shutting down,” said R. Subramanian in a note sent to the media. Sources confirm that the retailer hasn’t given salaries to its employees since October and owes a hefty amount to them across the country. “There are arrears on salaries and payments – not because we do not want to pay, but because we can’t pay,” admits Subramanian. The company is also planning to cut sown on its stores by a hefty count of 100-150 from the currently operating 1,600. Subhiksha, was once considered to be an underdog emerged as a very strong player in the retail industry, but the company made the mistake of over reliance on debt. They have raised only around Rs.1.8 billion on shareholder funds and the Rs.40 billion turnover in 2008 was funded largely through debt. Their equity plans last year fell flat as a result of the crisis, making their aggressive expansion ill-timed. “We did not budget for a time, when there would be no money,” asserts Subramanian. Subhiksha urgently needs a fresh infusion of Rs.300 crore to give their business a new start, but the unfortunate part is that getting funds from the market isn’t a cake walk in the current scenario.

Surely, even good ol’ Nero would take a bow!

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

The Republicans continue to behave irresponsibly as America faces crisis after crisis

Frank Rich Here’s a bottom line to keep you up at night: The economy is falling faster than Washington can get moving. President Barack Obama says his stimulus plan will save or create 4 million jobs in two years. In the last four months of 2008 alone, employment fell by 1.9 million. Do the math. The new-home sales rate has fallen to its all-time low since record-keeping began in 1963. What are Americans still buying? Big Macs, Campbell’s soup, Hershey’s chocolate and Spam – the four food groups of the apocalypse. The crisis is at least as grave as the one that confronted us – and, for a time, united us – after 9/11.

Which is why the antics among Republicans on Capitol Hill seem so surreal. Where is their patriotism now that economic terror is inflicting far more harm on their constituents than Saddam’s nonexistent WMD? The House stimulus bill is an inevitably imperfect hodgepodge-in-progress. Obama’s next move, a new plan to prevent the collapse of America’s banks, may prove more problematic still, especially given the subpar record of the new Treasury Secretary, Timothy Geithner, in warding off calamity while at the New York Fed. You might think that a loyal opposition would want to pitch in and play a serious role.

The current GOP acts as if it... and we... have all the time in the world. It kept hoping in vain that the fast-waning Blago sideshow would somehow impale Obama or Rahm Emanuel. It has come perilously close to wishing aloud that a terrorist attack will materialise to discredit Obama’s reversals of Bush policy on torture, military tribunals and Gitmo. The party’s sole consistent ambition is to play petty politics to gum up the works. If anything, the Republican congressional leadership seems to be emulating John McCain’s September stunt of “suspending” his campaign to “fix” the Wall Street meltdown. For all his bluster, McCain in the end had no fixes to offer and sat like a pet rock at the White House meeting on the crisis before capitulating to the bailout.

If the country wasn’t suffering, the Republicans’ behaviour would be a laugh riot. The House minority leader, John Boehner, from the economic wasteland of Ohio, declared on “Meet the Press” last Sunday that the GOP didn’t want to be “the party of ‘No’” but “the party of better ideas, better solutions.” And what are those ideas, exactly? He said he’ll get back to us “over the coming months.” His deputy, the Virginia congressman Eric Cantor, has followed the same script. Not to be left out, the party’s great white hope, Sarah Palin, unveiled a new political action committee last week with a website also promising “fresh ideas.” But as the liberal blogger Markos Moulitsas Zuniga observed, the site invites visitors to make donations and read Palin’s hagiography while offering no links to any ideas, fresh or otherwise.

For its own contribution to this intellectual void, the Republican National Committee convened last week under a new banner, “Republican for a Reason.” Perhaps that unidentified reason will be determined by a panel of judges on a TV reality show. It had better be brilliant given that only five states (with 20 total electoral votes) now lean red in party affiliation, according to Gallup. At this rate the GOP will be in Alf Landon territory by 2012. The Republicans do have one idea, of course, but it’s hardly fresh: more and bigger tax cuts, particularly for business and the well-off. That’s the sum of their “alternative” stimulus plan. Obama has tried to accommodate this panacea, perhaps to a fault. Mainstream economists in both parties believe that tax cuts in the stimulus package will deliver far less bang for the buck than, say, infrastructure spending. The tax-cut stimulus embraced a year ago by the GOP induced next-to-no consumer spending as Americans merely banked the savings or paid down debt.

The nightmare is that we have so irrelevant, clownish and childish an opposition party at a moment when America is in an all-hands-on-deck emergency that’s as trying as war. To paraphrase a dictum that has been variously attributed to two of our most storied leaders in times of great challenge, Thomas Paine and George Patton, the Republicans should either lead, follow or get out of the grown-ups’ way.

Frank Rich

Police have a network of informers. It it sufficient to stop terror acts?

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

‘It is unethical to target a particular community’

Hemant Karkade, head of the Anti-Terrorism Squad of Mumbai Police, is well known for his clean image and daredevilry. In this interview with TSI’s Danish Reyaz, the top cop sheds new light on the war against terror...

Even after so many arrests there seems no stopping the terrorists. Why is normalcy not returning?

There are no shortcuts for solving this. Short term solutions won’t do. We need a structural change to rein in terror. Police action can curb terror for a while, but this isn’t a permanent solution. Only social change can make that happen. There is a need to come out of the ghetto mentality. No country in the world has been able to rein in terror and India is not an exception.

Should India, like some other countries, go in for a Federal agency to combat terror?

Talks are going on for that, but first you need to take the state governments into confidence. We do have an anti-terror mechanism in place, but a federal agency would certainly be a shot in the arm. Now it is for the government to take a decision.

Police have a network of informers. It it sufficient to stop terror acts?

It helps a lot, no doubt. It is extremely necessary to follow the lead if the information is about a history-sheeter. We also punish informers who deliberately try to mislead us.

People are generally reluctant to share information with police, fearing it will get them into trouble. And nothing has been done to address this problem…

Helping police is like helping oneself. One must understand that by refusing to do so one is only harming oneself and will live to regret it. True there have at times been police excesses and well intentioned people have been harassed. But these are isolated cases. Also, such officers are punished. The people’s initiative is always welcome. I’d like to share the example of the Naya Nagar locality where inhabitants decided to hand over such elements to police themselves.

In nearly all cases there is prior information about the module that is planning the terror attack. However, it seems the police remain reluctant to make preventive detentions. Why?

India is a democratic country. There are clear guidelines that have to be followed. This is not a dictatorship where a person can be jailed without strong evidence. We have to ensure that fundamental rights are not infringed.
