India's foreign policy

Arindam’s editorial “Will India now show some spine….” (TSI, June 1-7) was superb. He has rightly said that India needs to work on its foreign policy. After all, our neighbourhood is on the boil, often counted amongst the world’s most dangerous places. Of the eight countries constituting the SAARC, at least five — Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka — are rocked by political instability and violence. Managing the neighbourhood should be on top of the list of the new government. The most important challenge is to re-establish India’s influence in the neighbourhood. India’s foreign policy can’t be outsourced. Arindam is also right to state that it’s high time that government should act and take steps for rehabilitation and fundamental rights of Lankan Tamils. The government should take up the issue at international levels. This will not only help stabilise the relationships and peace in the neighbouring country, but also mean the resurrection of our foreign policy.

The diffusion of technology has enabled Middle Easterners to monitor vote-rigging

Twenty years ago, I wrote a book about the Middle East, and recently I was thinking of updating it with a new introduction. It was going to be very simple – just one page, indeed just one line: “Nothing has changed.”

It took me two days covering the elections in Beirut, Lebanon, to realise that I was dead wrong. No, something is going on in the Middle East today that is very new.

What we saw in the Lebanese elections, where the pro-Western March 14 movement won a surprise victory over the pro-Iranian Hezbollah coalition, what we saw in the ferment for change exposed by the election campaign in Iran, and what we saw in the provincial elections in Iraq, where the big pro-Iranian party got trounced, is the product of four historical forces that have come together to crack open this ossified region.

First is the diffusion of technology. The Internet, blogs, YouTube and text messaging via cell phones, particularly among the young – 70 per cent of Iranians are under 30 – is giving Middle Easterners cheap tools to communicate, to mobilise politically and to criticise their leaders acerbically, outside of state control. It is also enabling them to monitor vote-rigging by posting observers with cell phone cameras.

Life’s living legend

Recently featured in " Earth’s Elders" Exhibit at the United Nations, 120-year-old Swami Bua is the world’s oldest living yogi. Born with physical disabilities, he fought his way back to life at two years of age after he'd gone into a coma and was assumed dead before dramatically returning to life on the funeral pyre. Having straddled three centuries in his happy, healthy and long life, the supercentenarian who's very sharp even at this age, reveals a secret or two about his longevity to Spriha Srivastava.

You seem to be fairly healthy for someone who’s lived to be this old. What is the secret?

The only secret that keeps me healthy is always speaking the truth and doing my dharma. Following these two things keeps me healthy and at peace.

Tell us a little about your early life.

It’s told that I’m the oldest known living yogi and I’m 120-years-old (born in 1889). The youngest of 17 children, I was born crippled and healed myself through yoga, mastering asana, pranayama, and kechari mudra. I have lived through countless near-death experiences, including being face-to-face with cobras, pythons, tigers, cannibals and even New York City robbers who punched my teeth out when I was 94. I teach Yoga from my Manhattan apartment. Some of my most memorable times have been spending time with Gandhiji, Subash Chandra Bose,

Tagore, Narayana guru, Bernard Shaw, Albert Einstein, Hitler and many more such eminent personalities.

Do you attribute your longevity and health to your diet, practice of yoga and yamas and niyamas?

All of these are important to lead a long and a healthy life. Any single thing can't be pointed out as a formula of living a long life.

What exactly is Sanyaas?

Sanyaas is nothing complicated. It simply means giving unconditional love to all.

How does celibacy affect longevity?

Celibacy is a result of controlling your emotions. So it basically means not spending your emotions but directing it towards the energy one has and increasing its level.

Does physical activity have a greater influence on longevity and health than mental activity?

Longevity is not a result of one aspect only. Both physical and mental health contribute to living a long life. Only when both are balanced, can one live a healthy and longer life. Both are connected.

Is meditation more important than asanas?

Actually, asanas are the preparation for meditation. And I don’t follow anybody’s teachings. My method of meditation comes from the Bhagvad Gita. And both, asanas and meditation are important to lead a good life.

Between the devil and the deep sea

Kerala’s been making a massive contribution to the Gulf migration since 1970s. The Gulf dream of the Keralites faced a set back in recent years due to the huge increase in cost of living in those countries. Dubai contributed the most to that, but many Keralites resisted it by sending their families back home. But the situation became worse with the recession. While increase in rent and other expenses affected the lower middle class in the Gulf, recession has hit everyone hard.

“Some of the labourers have been sent home on a long leave. The companies hope to take them back if the situation improves in five or six months. Most of them are given leave for five and a half months as continuous absence from the UAE for more than six months will automatically cause cancellation of their visas. Companies are finding a new way to reduce future expenses, which they will have to spend on visas. But visas of higher officials are being cancelled as they draw huge salaries,” says Abdul Gafoor, executive secretary of a consultancy firm in Dubai.

“I had to deliver termination letters to 15 engineers in my company. Most of them were drawing more than 10,000 dhs salary and the most senior among them was getting around 40,000 dhs. Ten of them are Indians and seven are from Kerala. I do not know when I will be asked to type my own termination letter,” fears Gafoor. As the recession had its first impact on the Gulf economy, the number of jobless was nearly 200 per week. But now it’s difficult to count, says a reporter in Dubai. “The government is taking tough measures to censor the news and authorities are trying their best to hide terrifying facts. As a result, rumours are spreading with wings,” he says on request of anonymity.

With repeated cases of sexual abuse, the church is under a very dark moral cloud in Kerala, and the silver lining seems nowhere in sight, says TSI’s K Sunilkumar

“Why do you humiliate your own brides? Lord, no woman could ever bear this insult. How could a nun who has dedicated her life to you for the last 33 years go through this?” asks former nun Jesme, who renounced the habit last year.

Jesme’s autobiography “Amen! Oru Kanyasthreeyude Atmakatha” (Amen! Autobiography of a Nun), has ignited a furious controversy in Kerala. Even though the media makes it look like a mere sex scandal, what Jesme has done really is brought out all the skeletons from the ‘forbidden fortress’, as she describes the church.

She first faced an unpleasant incident when still a novitiate. In a retreat for novices, she noticed that girls in her batch were uncomfortable about going to confession. “What’s the matter?” she inquired. Their reply was frightening: “You didn’t know? The father kisses each girl who goes for confession.” When her turn came, she opposed the lascivious priest. The ‘holy’ father justified his dirty lips with quotes from the Bible about divine kisses, Jesme writes.

But there was more to come. When she was teaching in St. Mary’s College, Thrissur, a sister tried to force her into sex. “She would come to my bed in the night and do dirty things, and I could not stop her, until she was transferred to another place,'' she recounts.

The third incident in Bangalore was perhaps the most shocking. She was directed to take rest at the office of a priest reputed to be clean. But he stripped and tried to molest her. When she resisted, he asked angrily if she had never seen a naked man. “When I said ‘never’, he undressed himself… After sometime he showed me a milk-like liquid. And he forced me to strip," Jesme said. “Are we safe even inside the walls of convents?” she asks.

Undisputed emperors of Bollywood music

Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammad Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Anand Bhakshi with Laxmikant- Pyarelal are inseparable names in Bollywood history: 35 years and more than 600 films bonded them together and that could be called the Golden Era of Bollywood music.

Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar and Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma were both from poor backgrounds. Both were keen on music and joined ‘Sureel Kala Kendra’ run by the Mangeshkar family in Bombay. Melody Queen Lata Mangeshkar introduced them to legends of Bollywood music industry. Interestingly, this duo worked under almost all the famous music directors at that time, like Naushad, SD Burman, C Ramachandra and Kalyanji-Anandji. For sure, they were enriched by the experience they got under all those veteran maestros. In 1964 with "Dosti" this duo’s career took off. After that no turning back for almost three and half decades and they become most popular music director of Bollywood. "Dushman", "Dosti", "Amar Akbar Anthony", "Satyam Shivam Sundaram", "Sargam", "Karz", "Ek Duuje Ke liye", "Mr. India", "Suadagar", the juggernaut rolled on Music director Adesh Srivatsav says “If you are a fan of Asha, Lata or Kishore it is implied that you are a fan of Laxmikant-Pyarelal."

Apropos, ''Mangalore deflowered!'' (TSI, Feb 9-15) makes an interesting point which has been always a note of discord between Hindus, Christians and Muslims in India. Politicians tend to use the discord as a 'ploy' to achieve their ulterior malafide objectives in the bargain. Abhorring 'pub culture' and giving it a 'tainted' colour with coatings of 'saffron' added to it, makes it a 'horrible and hideous' sight indeed! Time for politicians to abstain from such act of barbarism of attacking women in a pub or even public assembled in churches for their prayers! They have no right to interfere in their fundamental rights as Indian citizens. These are criminal and punishable offences under the law of the land!

Why are your eyes welling up…? Is it Koel? I’ve thought about it… I know Nik’s a great dad but Koel likes me too… we’ll be great together… And every now and then the three of you could spend time together, for Koel’s sake and for your own… What do you say, Kobita? … Kobita, where are you going… Kobita…?’ And she was gone… without a word… That was the last I saw or heard of her… that bright red sari disappearing in the inky blackness of a winter evening. It’s been two weeks and she hasn’t taken my calls or responded to messages. I’ve ruined what we had but I have no regrets… at least she knows. I don’t have the courage to call Nik… I’ve done nothing wrong but I still feel guilty when I think of him. I told Che-chi (his elder sister) about all this… she says I was wrong… Wrong to have asked a married woman to leave her husband and deprive a child of her father. “What kind of a woman would she have to be to leave them behind after so many years of marriage? Not someone you’d want to live with, VJ…” she’d said. And maybe she’s right. I’m being selfish and it’s wrong to expect her to be the same… I love Kobita and I know she loves me… she always has… but it doesn’t matter anymore, does it, Pickles?”

State pollution control board blasts six hospitals

Though pollution control boards, especially in the states, are regarded as toothless tigers, the lately awoken one in Karnataka has at least decided to snarl, ordering six top hospitals in the state to shut down, after relocating patients at their own cost, within 15 days! Their offence: repeated refusal to implement basic sewage treatment guidelines mandatory under the environment protection laws, and arrogantly ignoring more than one show cause notice of the KPCB.

In the absence of sewage treatment plants, biologically contaminated sewage is polluting waterbodies around the area and becoming a health hazard for residents of the city.

On January 20, the Lok Adalat ordered the KPCB to ensure ‘stringent action’ against all six hospitals. On February 12, the board issued the closure notice. It has been four years since the first complaint had reached the High Court, and since then the hospitals have ignored all notices and strictures. Kempegowda Hospital, ESI Hospital, Chinmaya Mission Hospital, Saint Martha’s Hospital, HAL Hospital, and Ambedkar Medical College & Hospital are the ones warned by the PCB. Two of these are also state medical colleges.

The board has told Bangalore Electricity Supply Company and Bangalore Water Board to cut off the facilities to these hospitals right away. “Even though they were given sufficient time to set up the plants, they have not taken the instruction seriously. As a result, untreated bio-contaminated sewage is being let out into waterbodies and is causing health hazards. We have been ordered by the Lok Adalat to take stern action,” a senior PCB official told TSI. However, the hospitals managements were unrepentant: “We have not received any communication regarding this so far,” Commander (Retd) IA D’Cunha, Chief Administrator, Saint Martha’s hospital told TSI.

In the wake of this strong message conveyed by the board, even the other government hospitals got unnerved and hastily appealed for another three months time to set up sewage treatment plants. If they fail to keep their word, they too will meet with the same fate. May be a freshly woken tiger will finally save the city rather than devour it!

The BJP’s Nagpur conclave brought out open dissensions and squabbles, not a unified strategy that had been the aim, says TSI’s Sharad Gupta

One needs to have a clear strategy, be it in war or elections, on whether one should save one’s best soldiers for strategising in war-rooms or for fighting on the ground. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been in two minds. It wanted the stalwarts to focus on election management till only a fortnight ago, when its prime ministerial candidate LK Advani directed senior leaders to contest the polls. His argument: this would bolster the party’s morale.

Almost all the top leaders, including party chief Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitely, Venkaiah Naidu and Sushma Swaraj, are members of the Rajya Sabha and have not contested a parliamentary election for a long time. Advani’s directive, thus, came as a bolt from the blue for BJP’s “election managers.” While Rajnath Singh, having identified Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh for himself and having secured support of Ajit Singh’s Rashtriya Lok Dal, was well prepared, Sushma hastily zeroed in on Bhopal, which has been returning BJP candidates to Lok Sabha consistently for the past six elections. But Jaitely and Naidu were in a quandary, since the latter contested only once (from Hyderabad) and the former has never had the experience.

In love with love

Falling in love is like a high that you just cannot understand. The thrill of the first touch is like driving at 120 kmph in the wrong lane. You begin relating with clichés like ‘love completes you’ and ‘all you need is love’. As the feeling of being loved and wanted so entirely, grows, you begin to smile a lot more… “It is that pleasant feeling that gives you a natural high and ends up making the person feel healthy and stronger and richer from within,” says Dr Sanjay Chugh. You begin to make little sacrifices, which, “is the behavioural way to show love,” says Paul Van Lange of Free University at Amsterdam. “Generosity is doing more good to the partner than the partner has done for you, and is, like sacrifice, an important trust-building activity,” says Lange. Renowned psychologist, Dr Robert Sternberg demystified love with his Triangular Theory of Love. “Love is a combination of intimacy, passion, and commitment. The more of each you have, the better the love you have,” says Dr Sternberg.

Throughout history people have attempted to figure out what love is, and how it takes over our lives. In the last century, psychologists, biologists, anthropologists and neurologists have all conducted studies and researches to understand that warm, fuzzy feeling better. Studies in neuroscience have shown that when a person falls in love, the brain releases chemicals like pheromones, dopamine, norepinephrine, serotonin that make that person feel all nice and happy, and so in love! Neurologists like Dr. Andrew Newberg have observed activity in the brain of a person in love and Newberg has even gone on to state that love has a similar effect to that of drugs, which we so often pop in for relief, and that without love, humanity wouldn’t be able to last for long…

All those goons pushing their weight around, threatening to patrol towns with a pundit in tow to marry off all young couples celebrating Valentine’s Day need to sit back and realise that love is an emotion to treasure,

not to sully with slurs. We humans are wired such that we can care and love, and the youth in India have every right to find their soul mates without being chastised. On Valentine’s, if not every other day, thank your partner for how he/she has made your life beautiful. And remember, perfect relationships are not only what fairy tales are made of, but also what you and your mate can achieve. Like Dr Robert Sternberg says, “lots of love, shared values, shared interests, shared views about roles in the relationship”

go into making a couple picture perfect. “Also, the willingness to compromise and care more about the other person than about oneself,” says Dr Sternberg. So go on, make your Valentine’s day this Valentine!

Trotsky to Rivera

Trotsky was a key figure in the Bolshevik seizure of power in Russia, second only to Lenin in the early stage of Soviet communist rule. However, he lost out to Stalin in the power struggle that followed Lenin''s death, and was assassinated while in exile. Following letter was written to one of Trotsky''s loyal sympathisers and the famous Mexican Marxist muralist, Diego Rivera. The letter discusses some of the articles that appeared in the “Bourgeoisie Press” denouncing collaboration of Communist Party of China with Kuomintang’s Chiang Kai-shek during the Sino-Japanese war.

September 23, 1937

Dear Comrade Diego Rivera

During the past few days I have been reading some of the lucubration of the Oehlerites and the Eiffelites on the civil war in Spain and on the Sino-Japanese War. Lenin called the ideas of these people "infantile disorders." A sick child arouses sympathy.

I want to stop to discuss in this letter only the Sino-Japanese War. In my declaration to the bourgeois press, I said that the duty of all the workers'' organizations of China was to participate actively and in the front lines of the present war against Japan, without abandoning, for a single moment, their own program and independent activity. But that is "social patriotism!" the Eiffelites cry. It is capitulation to Chiang Kai-shek! It is the abandonment of the principle of the class struggle! Bolshevism preached revolutionary defeatism in the imperialist war. Now, the war in Spain and the Sino-Japanese War are both imperialist wars.

We do not and never have put all wars on the same plane. Marx and Engels supported the revolutionary struggle of the Irish against Great Britain, of the Poles against the tsar, even though in these two nationalist wars the leaders were, for the most part, members of the bourgeoisie and even at times of the feudal aristocracy . . . at all events, Catholic reactionaries. When Abdel-Krim rose up against France, the democrats and Social Democrats spoke with hate of the struggle of a "savage tyrant" against the "democracy."

Awful show

I completely agree with Arindam Chaudhuri that "Slumdog Millionaire sucks" (TSI, English, Feb 2-8). Sutanu Guru’s words are even hitting. Out of curiosity, I watched the movie and mid-way I just got out. I couldn't tolerate such humiliation. I wonder how come it got so many Oscar nominations. (I have to admit that AR Rahman's music alone deserved the entry). The movie was pathetic! The director had mocked at India and Indian culture from the very first scene. I don’t know why even Indians keep on praising this movie? The director had even mocked at a popular game show, showing Indians in bad light. And almighty Lord Rama was shown angry… for a minute I thought he was Shiva. The scenes where they show as if Anil Kapoor deliberately wants to get the hero out of the millionaire competition by misleading with the wrong answer, are pathetic. No denying the fact that in India we have problems like poverty, slums, communalism etc. But the director could have shown positive aspects of India and it's culture also. It just shows India in bad light, portraying India as an under-developed nation. And that’s why it is getting all the limelight at the global stage. It sucks!

perfume merchant, Badruddin Ajmal, tried to alter the scenario during Assembly elections in Assam two years ago by forming a political party – Assam United Democratic Front (AUDF) with the professed agenda for development of Muslims. It tasted some success by bagging 10 seats (two of its MLAs are Hindus) and performing well in over two dozen others, thereby nearly upsetting the Congress applecart in the state. Now, Ajmal wants to take his party to the national level and plans to field candidates in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, sounding a warning bell for parties like Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal, Samajwadi Party and Nationalist Congress Party. Ajmal is clear about his agenda: “My party will take up the cause of downtrodden classes too, as much as it will take up Muslim-related issues,” he told TSI.

Muslim scholars feel that mainstream secular parties have been misleading them by raising the bogey of the BJP. “We could not form a party so far because of a spectre of a polarisation on communal lines, which would obviously benefit the BJP. But, when Mayawati and Ram Vilas Paswan can work for the welfare of Dalits, Mulayam Singh and Lalu Yadav can work for their clansmen without fear, why can’t we do the same for our community,” asks Maulana Qasmi, president of AUDF’s Maharashtra unit.
