Moral hazard and increase in default rate will be the consequences, news of some of which has already started to come up.

EXPENSIVE SCHEMES: EXCHEQUERSamajwadi Party General Secretary, Amar Singh, expectably acerbic towards the ruling coalition, commented, “This is one country where subsidies are given to super-rich and that too clandestinely.” The pragmatic approach would have been to implement at least some of the recommendations made by the Radhakrishna Committee on Rural Indebtedness. Instead of waiving off the entire loan, rescheduling – as proposed by the Radhakrishna Committee – would have surely been a better option. Mridul Saggar, Chief Economist, Kotak Institutional Equities, commented to B&E, “Even supply side structural initiatives are required!” Required more than expensive schemes, we should add.

In a similar manner, if the recent government salary recommendation fructifies, government employees would see a substantial rise in their salaries and of course, the country will see a mammoth rise in its wage budget as well (Rs.431.2 billion). An Asian Development Bank research now shows that India pays to its government staff much more than what it can afford. Worse, it comments, “The higher relative government pay rates cost the country in terms of economic growth, while the higher employment share does not seem to have any economic growth impact.” Cutting words that might have made more sense to Ms. upper crest Veronica Lodge nestled in Riverdale; sadly, not to our politicians, our Uncle Scrooge politicians...

Stoned over sex

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Gay pride surfaces on the streets of India and around the world...

Stoned over sex “We are humans and are born like everyone else, but have feelings contrary to what is acceptable to the society. I am a guy and I love a guy, which means that people hate me and consider me to be different and weaker than others,” says Mayank, a front runner at the gay parade held in Delhi. On 29th June, 2008, Delhi, Kolkata and Bangalore played hosts to India’s first gay pride parades that drew a huge number of people. Holding placards with slogans like, ‘As good as you’, ‘Hindu-Muslim, Sikh-Isai, hetro-homo bhai bhai,’ the gathering marched peacefully through the streets, and was successful in making the Indian gays, bisexuals and transgenders surface and express their individuality.

Commemorating the Stonewall riots of 1969, which occurred in New York and kick-started the modern gay rights movement, homosexuals around the world came out on the roads holding high their rainbow-coloured flags. Like every year, parades were held in several countries and like India, Bulgaria and Czech Republic too held these parades for the first time ever. Though unlike India, those who assembled at Sofia and Brno were given a rather hostile reception. In Bulgaria; stones and gas-bombs were thrown at people attending the parade, while in Brno, right-wing extremists attacked the people with tear gas even before the march began! “I feel sorry to hear of such incidents where people do not respect people and cannot give heed to others’ feelings. I feel sorry for people who cannot accept us. At times we feel that we do not wish to be a part of this heartless society,” reacts Sachin, who had also participated at the parade.

“Hum honge kamyab ek din...” was the song on the lips of the people at the parade, and it showed the high spirits and firm belief of the activists that they would get their rights. All they want is that they should be recognised as a part of the society and people should not hurt their sentiments by mocking at them.

People in several countries have accepted gays as a part of their society and have given them the rights and respect due to any individual in the society. The Indian society is having problems in accepting homosexuals, bisexuals and transgenders, yet there are people who consider them to be a part of the society, and Himanshu, who works with an NGO that is fighting for gay rights, happens to be one. “I don’t think that anyone should have a problem with homosexuals, they are normal human beings. When the ancient Greeks did not differentiate between people based on their sexual orientation, then why should we fix ourselves to certain rules, which we have made for our own benefit?”

In the current scenario if someone dares to think beyond the set rules then he or she is not welcome to be a part of the community anymore. If a person’s son or daughter turns out to be gay then sadly many go ahead and disown them, throw them out of the house, or worse force them to mask their true selves and marry people of the opposite sex, thus ruining lives of not one but of two people!

Most gays abide by the norms of the society, silently hoping that some day they would be able to make their lives better, live the way they want to live, and be the person they want to be, and not what others want them to be.

Buffet shoots himself!

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Is the world’s richest man, Warren Buffet, risking the shareholder’s funds by not announcing his succession plans?

SUCCESSION: WARREN BUFFET It’s May 3, 2008. A whopping crowd of 31,000 is present at the Qwest Center at Omaha in Nebraska. Visitors enjoy themselves by watching movies, singing, dancing, laughing away at jokes et al. And why not, when the event is the AGM of Berkshire Hathaway, who is commonly known as the ‘Woodstock of Capitalists.’ It’s an AGM that is not just a routine event but a jamboree of celebrations for shareholders across the globe, especially when the meeting is addressed by Warren Buffet – Chairman & CEO of the company and the richest person in the world, who merrily treats himself and even his guests with Coke (Buffet owns 8% stake in Coca-Cola & Co.) and now chocolates, since he has participated in the Mars’ takeover of Wrigley. That’s Warren Buffet for you – uncomplicated and straightforward, much unlike the market knowledge he has so diligently mastered and leveraged over the years.

From selling newspapers to building an empire worth a sterling $139.30 billion, Buffet has not only made money for his shareholders, but has brought as many as 38 companies under the Hathaway umbrella. The recent acquisition of Wrigley Jr. Co. by Buffet in partnership with Mars for a not-so-sweet $23 billion is a clear indication of how his risk taking appetite is yet to wane. And of course, not without reward. Hathaway has, for the past 25 years, maintained a record of announcing an average of 25% annual dividend. And never has the company ever gone for a stock split or faced any crisis situation.

A Wharton graduate, Buffet has always been reckoned as a man with a third eye. When he went ahead and bought Chinese Government-owned PetroChina for $500 million in 2002, he has recently quoted to Fortune, “I read only the annual report of PetroChina and instantly decided to buy it.” While analysts condemned it as a futile attempt, Buffet proved everybody wrong when he sold PetroChina for $4 billion in 2006. More recently, stock prices of crisis-ridden Bear Stearns shot up by 8% just by the mere rumour that Buffet was acquiring it. That’s the power of Buffet – the man Forbes ranked as the world’s richest person in March 2008.

Alarmingly, though, net profits of the company have dangerously fallen by 65% to $940 million in Q1’08 from $2.684 billion in Q1 ‘07. Since the results were declared on May 2, shares fell to $1,22,800 on May 12, a fall of 8.08%. So far Buffet is at the helm of affairs, shareholders needn’t worry. But for how long? Two key officials of Hathaway – Buffet and Charles Munger, 84, who is not only the company’s Vice Chairman, but also a life long friend of Buffet, are at the end of their working tenures (?). Unlike any other top line executive, Buffet, 77, reportedly claims that he does not intend to retire any time soon and wishes to continue to work even until six years after he dies! Buffet might consider himself invincible, but the fact is that the company’s succession planning is still a big mystery. So there could remain a niggling bearishness with respect to the company, even if bottomlines improve.

The worst mistake an iconic leader can make is not to appoint a suitable successor. That one mistake could make Berkshire Hathaway fall apart, taking all those chocolates & Cokes down the drain, unless Buffet & Munger do indeed have a fool proof strategy for an afterlife!

Young guns..., as personnel are away from their homes during these times, and indulge in ‘risky sexual behaviour’.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

AIDS and defense forces: danger

DEFENSE: AIDS They never told us joining the armed forces would be so much fun! Forget war and terrorism, the exciting news for a warrior looking for a fight now is AIDS! As per Defence Minister A. K. Antony, there have been 255 positive cases of AIDS from 2004 to 2006. As per official data, there were 144 AIDS cases in 2004 and 377 in 2006. With a total of around 6,108 soldiers estimated to be infected with AIDS virus, this disease is relatively spreading very fast. The ministry claims (and it may be right this time) that those are insurgency postings that are adding to these numbers; as personnel are away from their homes during these times, and indulge in ‘risky sexual behaviour’.

Even before the ministry thinks about organising awareness camps and medication for the forces in general, a particular data might give them more insights. India not only has one of the largest standing armies in the world, it also has the largest percentage of AIDS patients: 81% of total AIDS patients are from the Army, 2% from Air Force and 10% from the Navy. Not that people were preferring the Air Force or Navy over the Army (were they?), but the Army surely has a new PR disaster in the making!
