Wildlife coverage par excellence

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

The world is full of beautiful creatures and 'Wildlife Special Issue' (TSI, Nov 24-30) showcased some of the endangered species and highlighted their plight. The coverage was of par-excellence. It is a matter of great concern that in the near future many species would extinct and our generations won't be fortunate enough to see them. We should be thankful to the heroes, in true sense, who have devoted their life for the cause of these creatures. It is everyone's duty to preserve the nature, protect the environment and the wildlife but it is not happening. We do have some laws to shield the wildlife from the poachers and protect encroachment of wildlife sanctuaries, but they are not effective enough.

Chartered accounts win!

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

The idea seems to be to cut out cost accountants totally

The Institute of Cost & Works Accountants of India (ICWAI), one of the last three All India Institutes still remaining at Kolkata, is all set to shift to Delhi. The shift, interestingly, is motivated by a strange logic: to be in closer proximity with the power lobby at the Centre! However, many of the members fear a hidden agenda behind amalgamating the ICWAI with The Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICAI) at Delhi, where now cost accountants will be swallowed by their bigger counterparts, the chartered accountants.

Since it is being felt increasingly difficult to feed the growing number of practicing chartered accountants, it is now necessary to substantially take away the market of practicing cost accountants, disclosed sources close to ICAI, speaking on condition of anonymity. The CAs will do all the work, including those earmarked for cost accountants, while the latter can be junior partners or employees of chartered accountants in multidisciplinary firms now being envisaged in the Limited Liability Partnership Bill 2008 tabled recently in the Parliament.

The Bill seeks to dilute, or eliminate, the provision of cost audit by cost accountants. For instance, in Clause 131(2) of the Bill on Statutory Cost Audit, the very ‘qualification’ of cost auditor has been omitted. Clause 131(5) of the Bill specifies that ‘qualification’ of general auditor (financial auditor) will also apply to cost auditors and such ‘qualification’ of auditor is specified in Clause 124(1). And what is that qualification? “A person shall be eligible for appointment as an auditor of a company only if he is a chartered accountant in practice”. It means chartered accountants will now do cost audit, replacing cost accountants!

The provision of statutory cost audit by Cost & Management Accountants (CMAs) in the present Companies Act, now covering 44 industries, provides an independent review of costs and cost management efficacies of corporates.

This issue was discussed during a meeting of the general members of Eastern India Regional Council (EIRC) on November 1 at Kolkata where a strongly worded resolution was adopted in support of retaining the exclusive right of CMAs to do cost audit. Interestingly, soon after this resolution was highlighted by the media, Kunal Banerjee, ICWAI president who is also an ICAI member (a former practicing CA), slapped show case notices on EIRC vice president and treasurer asking why disciplinary action should not be taken against them for airing their views – which he found to be in “bad taste” and which had “damaged the cause of the Institute to a great extent” – to the media. This show cause notice has come as a surprise to many members who wonder if the ‘cause of the institution’ could be helped by abolishing CMAs’ right to do cost audit, and if the ICWAI president was more inclined to serve the interests of chartered accountants, even if it is at the cost of CMAs. In the ICWAI Council, four out of five government nominees are chartered accountants.

Ghai’s no show

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Subhash ‘Showman’ Ghai, known for his big canvas sagas, puts on a sketchy show this time with “Yuvvraaj”. The actors are not to blame, for while Ghai takes a stab at emotional melodrama to win-over the audiences, it is the back-to-the-80s script – complete with scheming mamas and estranged brothers – that betrays this effort. It is only with Katrina ever so often breaking into a smile, the vistas of Prague and Austria providing a picture perfect background, Salman putting on a decent show in spurts and Anil Kapoor a very convincing one all through, that stops this one from being a complete write-off even as the rather pathetic ‘villains’ only serve to amuse.

The premise of the film is simple yet fantastic – Deven (Salman Khan) was first sent to a hostel and then thrown out of his house after repeated fights with his elder autistic brother (Anil Kapoor). Years later, cellist Katrina Kaif is his girlfriend whom he is not able to marry as her billionaire dad disapproves of his impoverished condition. Upon hearing of his own billionaire dad’s death, he makes his way home to claim his inheritance but is faced with a spoilt, roguish younger brother (Zayed Khan), a herd of villainous relatives, and his father’s will.

Simply put: “Yuvvraaj” is not a flick to remember and does not come within a mile of Ghai’s bests.

Importance of education

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

We need at least a fair, if not path breaking, education system to make people realise the importance of having educated, committed and inspiring people as leaders. Thanks Arindam, I'll try to read good books and I'll also develop this habit in my children. Oh... yes, let them start with "Uncle Tom's Cabin".

Lagga bagga's champion

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Lagga Bagga - Unknown Author

Lagga-bagga, a vital enclave of the Pilibhit Forest Division of U.P. is a link between India’s Kishanpur wildlife sanctuary and Nepal’s Royal Shukla Phanta wildlife reserve. Here, tigers, elephants and rhinos wander at will across the India-Nepal border. Being a marshy area, patrolling is a difficult task. The place can be easily accessed from Nepal making wildlife extremely vulnerable to poaching, unless strictly protected.

I can't reveal my identity for the price I'll have to pay might be too high. I've been a director of several national parks but when I took charge of the Pilibhit division, I found that in Lagga-bagga around 700 hectares of forest land was under encroachment. This was because due to its great distance from the district headquarters at Pilibhit and the laid back attitude of the local staff which had emboldened the unlawful elements. To eliminate this, I met many forest officials, like the district magistrate, and we listed down names of mafias and the main encroachers. Strict actions were also taken against them. By 1st December 1996, the area became encroachment free. I had to face many problems from mafias and encroachers and also got injured on various occasions. The encroachers living in that area had also filed enquiries against me. Despite of several cases being lodged against me, nothing has ever happened to me because my intentions have been right.

Wildlife protection and forest conservation requires determination, devotion and a reliable, well- equipped and strong intelligence network. Here, no one now tries to encroach since people have been punished and I can safely say that it has become a great forest area without any threat.

Shahtoosh: The forbidden handloom

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

The cruel beauty of a Shahtoosh shawl has become a shroud for the threatened antelope.

Ali Muhammad Sofi (65) was the proprietor of a weaving workshop of 10 Shahtoosh handlooms before the trade was declared forbidden by the J&K government, following a court judgment in a public interest litigation filed by the Wildlife Protection Society of India in 2000.

Now his son Altaf Ahmad sits hunched over a single hand loom, weaving Pashmina instead of Shahtoosh. Most Shahtoosh weavers now make shawls from Pashmina fine wool taken from the domestic goats from Kashmir's Ladakh region. But Ali and Altaf are not pleased with Pashmina weaving as it fetches them very little money. "It takes a week to weave a Pashmina shawl (two meters long) and it brings me just Rs 500. I could get more than Rs 1500 by weaving a Shahtoosh shawl in the same time and with the same effort", said Altaf.

For centuries, Kashmir has been the only place in the world where Shahtoosh is spun and later woven into a shawl. It is said that Shah Hamdan, a Muslim saint and social reformer, introduced Shahtoosh trade in this area 650 years ago. Now, nearly 50,000 Shahtoosh weavers have been fighting for survival since the government banned the 650-year-old trade, eight years ago. "I learned shawl-weaving from my father and then I taught my son. I had been spinning Shahtoosh for 45 years. But from the last eight years there is no work for us", said Ali. "Shahtoosh shawls were in demand in the international markets as well. These legendary shawls were prized possessions of the weavers and traders, but now there are few takers", he added.

Shahtoosh (also written Shatush) – a Persian word, which means 'the king of wool' is an ultra-fine wool with a highly prized velvety feel. This wool is derived from the Tibetan Antelope (chiru), which lives in altitudes of 15,000 to 20,000 feet. Nature has endowed it with a two-layered fur, which is essential for its survival.

Shahtoosh production and its trade was banned globally in 1975, after it was revealed that chirus were being killed for their wool. The Indian government followed suit in 1991, but J&K had exempted itself from the trade ban till 2000.

Weavers and traders in Kashmir still deny that chirus were being killed for its wool. According to them, the animals shed their wool during the end of winters and Tibetan nomads collect that wool to supply it to weavers in Kashmir. "There is no evidence to confirm that the animal is killed for its fur. When the animal is killed, the wool also loses its worth. So it's a myth that chirus were being killed to get Shahtoosh wool", said Dr Mubeen Shah, Chairman of Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industries. Shakeel Qalander, President, Federation Chamber of Industries, Kashmir, echoed, "The production and trade of Shahtoosh is being done for more than six centuries. If the animal was being killed, it would have vanished many centuries ago". However, specialists insist that after the animal is killed in the most brutal manner in the Tibetan plateau, the wool is smuggled into the Kashmir valley via Nepal. International wildlife organisations say that five chirus are shot and skinned to make one shawl. In a published report, George Schaller, biologist of the New York based Wildlife Conservation Society, had written, "We saw herdsmen plucking wool from the Tibetan antelope to sell to local dealers. In the courtyard of one such dealer were sacks of wool ready for smuggling to Nepal, and from there to Kashmir, where the wool is woven into scarves and shawls." It was estimated that there were 10,00,000 chirus in the Tibetan Plateau in the last century, and current estimates of the Chiru population ranges between 50,000 and 75,000.

Shahtoosh trade used to support about half a million Kashmiri traders and weavers before being banned. However, some weavers and traders carry on this business on the sly. A top government official seeking anonymity said that the Shahtoosh shawls are still being made, though in lesser numbers. And we did find a shawl workshop owner in Srinagar who admitted, "We used to weave more than 100 shawls before the trade was banned but now we make only 15 to 20. We are always fearful because, if trapped, we will be punished."

Clearly more needs to be done to ensure that chirus are not sacrificed at the altar of man's greed.

Lost in the wild

IIPM Ranked No1 B-School in India

Overworked and underpaid, India''s forest guards battle despair.

The strict vigil of forest guards at the Ranthambore National Park has considerably reduced the number of poaching cases and has also kept trespassers who destroy forests at bay. Kedar Khan, a 54-year-old forest guard, pours out the plight of such men whose passion for conserving the wildlife is slowly diminishing…

My name is Kedar Jat. I am a forest guard and have been one for the past 27 years. Ranthambore is like my motherland and since childhood we have been taught to protect its extensive wildlife. The passion of learning about the wildlife that I have been living with made me complete an MA degree in Zoology. The education gave me better knowledge and understanding of animals, which made my will to conserve wildlife even stronger. The happiest day of my life was when I was employed as a forest guard in Ranthambore, a National Park that is so close to my heart. But I hadn’t anticipated that this job would one day leave me in distress.

I am 54 now and still have to be on vigil for 24 hours. There is no rotation or shift system of guards because there are hardly any forest guards. The forest department is highly understaffed due to which we have to overstretch our work hours and be on guard all the time. There has been no increment in our salary for many years. We are paid only Rs 9000 per month, which is hardly anything to run a family with kids. Now and then, we are told that something will be done, but those are just words. Moreover, even in a 24-hour job, we hardly get to fill our stomach. All we eat is roti and onions. There is no mess for people like us in the offices. Since we live in the jungle, we have to walk for about 20 kms even to get salt and due to old age, it's very tough on our body.

The most demoralising aspect is that we haven’t been promoted, ever! Although we would do anything to safeguard the wildlife, but appreciation is what drives us. And that is totally missing. Many forest guards have lost their lives to protect the animals from intruders and poachers. I once had a tussle with the Mogias and was also shot by one. Once I was surrounded by this huge group of woodcutters, about 30-40 of them, and was badly beaten up by them. Had such incidents happened with police officers, they would have been quickly promoted. They would have got a quarter from the department and good money to run their household and to send children to good schools. We are deprived of all these facilities. There have been times when we have had to chase the poachers and other intruders for several kilometres. It's a tough job. Just an appreciation, by at least providing us with basic facilities like education for children and a good home to live, would give us the motivation to work. There are only about 48 forest guards in Rajasthan and there are no more candidates for this job. We are the best-trained guards in India and would like to pass on this training to others also but unfortunately there’s no one.

All we want is protection of our animals and our beautiful wildlife, but in return at least give us some benefit. There are ex-military men working with us and there are conflicts that have been happening for years. Being from a higher rank, they always dominate over us, though they know that we know more about this profession and about Ranthambore. All these factors have highly demotivated us, to such an extent that now I can’t think of asking my children to continue this work. When there is no benefit at all for us, why should we get our children involved in something like this? Ranthambore has given back life to Sariska. We don’t want to relax. We want to work. But what motivation do we have to work? We are stressed out and frustrated and we also don’t see people coming in for this job. It’s a sad truth that those who really want to work for protecting our wildlife are not given any kind of incentive to keep this passion burning in us.

“I’ll tell you… The lines are Kipling’s (Tiger--Tiger) but they speak of my soul…”

ZEE BUSINESS BEST B SCHOOL SURVEY

What of the quarry ye went to kill?

Brother, he crops in the jungle still.

Where is the power that made your pride?

Brother, it ebbs from my flank and side.

Where is the haste that ye hurry by?

Brother, I go to my lair to die.

The legend that had taken on a life and aura of its own as it emanated from his being while we spoke had shrunk back into the tiny old man as he hobbled back to his room. As he stopped to turn and wave, I said a silent prayer, for I hoped and believed that old tiger will roar for long still… for who knows what these forests would become, if not for that roar.

“War on terror’ drives US arms industry”

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

They’ve overrun Iraq, Afghanistan… no one knows who’s next

After the 9/11 tragedy there emerged widespread fear and paranoia in the United States and the Bush administration exploited it fully to perpetuate its rule. Taking advantage of that paranoia that was essentially created by the mass media, President Bush took the decision to invade Iraq – on the pretext that Saddam Hussein was harbouring weapons of mass destruction – and Afghanistan, to brow-beat the Taliban and capture or kill Osama bin Laden and the top hierarchy of al-Qaeda.

The Bush administration also took a tough stance towards Pakistan and reportedly threatened it with dire consequences if it did not side with the US in the so called "war on terror" and forego its allegiance to the Taliban. Now the US has indicated that it might withdraw its forces from Iraq and send more forces to Afghanistan, where it is fighting a loosing war. It has also hinted that it is interested in resolving regional conflicts, including the Kashmir issue, which is a positive sign.

No wonder India has started lobbying with the new US government and has sent a delegation there. However, India is not in a position to pressurise the United States at the moment, but it feels threatened by escalation of tension on Pakistan-Afghan borders, especially by the hyper activity of International Assistance Security Forces (ISAF)-operated drones that are ostensibly targeting al-Qaeda and the Taliban, but in fact are also killing innocent civilians, including women and children. India perceives that the conflict in the area was a threat to the entire region, and I think this is a positive perception.

I think regional powers such as India and China can play a vital role in bringing regional peace and stability. I also think that Kashmir and Afghanistan issues should be solved through peaceful means and any move in this direction, whether it is from the US President-elect Barack Obama or any other country should be welcomed.

However, I want to make it clear that the "war on terror" is not aimed at eliminating terrorism. On the contrary, it gave a boost to the military-industrial complex of the United States and is aimed at grabbing the energy resources of the Middle East, Central Asia, Iran and Afghanistan. A "Great Game" has surfaced on a new plane and the integrity and sovereignty of developing countries such as Pakistan and Afghanistan is at stake. The US presence in the region and its aggressive designs have led to anger and frustration amongst the vast majority of the people and culminated in anti-US sentiments.

Time to get real about virtual worlds

The prude in me made me walk out of that store with merely some fancy clothes and accessories, but I did find my way to some clubs. Fantastically created ambiences greeted me at every club I stepped into, which had plenty of thingamajigs that allowed you to make your avatar do the salsa, tango, belly dance etc and hug and kiss your partner. One of the clubs, Lara Beach Club, had posters of Aishwarya Rai, Mumtaz and Rajesh Khanna. Waqas Rau, co-owner of Lara Beach Club, boasted to me, “Lara Beach Club is now the biggest eastern club on SL with 1500+ members in only two months.” They’re not making any profits though, “I spend 50,000 L every month in running this club, but we’re only starting,” said Waqas. You can own lovely homes in such virtual worlds – complete with drapes, marble floors and chandeliers. I once, accidentally, teleported myself right into someone’s home, but thankfully the mistress of the house didn’t reproach me for the intrusion. Alicia told me that this house, which she shared with her SL husband and child, cost them 800 L per week. “My SL husband is my real life boyfriend since two years, but my daughter – I don’t know her in real life,” said Alicia, and so led me on to realise that SL has a number of adoption agencies. Here, children (in real life older than 18 years though – the minimum age required to register on SL) and parents wishing to adopt put up their profiles, and couples and children walk in and choose the people with whom they would like to build their virtual family. Disco Simons, owner of Kids Place Adoption Mall, believes that families in SL can become as precious as ones in real life. “Your feelings are real in this game as well. A lot of children come back to tell us how happy they are.” There are umpteen cities and communities in SL. To help me figure my way around, Ambassador Atlas had given me a number of landmarks to which I could teleport myself. “Violet is a small tightly knit community. Waterhead is vile and, at times, full of nihilistic twerps. Wengen is a small community of fun folks…” But the one place I was most excited at finding was Bollywood! A riot of colours and dome-shaped buildings greet you here. “Bollywood was the first Indian-themed island on Second Life. Since its launch in July 2007, it has grown to become one of the most popular hangout for Indians and others interested in Indian film and culture on Second Life,” says Siddharth Banerjee, founder & CEO of Indusgeeks Solutions P Ltd. “We realised early that it was important to invest in these worlds. Besides Bollywood, Indusgeeks also operates SLJobfinder.com, which is the largest employment service for virtual worlds like Second Life,” said Banerjee. Joni West from California is another entrepreneur who learnt early the possibilities SL presented to businesses. “I wound up establishing my own agency, This Second Marketing LLC, which brings real world clients into Second Life in an effective and relevant way. Our happy clients include Colgate, Nestle, IMAX, and CareerBuilder.com to name a few,” says Joni. On people investing in businesses in SL, Joni says, “There are thousands of people making more money from Second Life than they are paying to be there. A woman got famous by buying land early on and developed a housing project like a real world developer and reportedly made over a million real dollars in the real estate market. There are also some very successful clothing and furniture businesses. Pre-fab houses, body shapes, ‘skins,’ and animations are also lucrative businesses for those who take them seriously in Second Life.”

A few words on the men who can walk the terrain blindfolded

Imagine: at 18,000 feet, you have to reach the next post ahead with your team of four, to relieve the men at Qazi Post, at 22,000 feet. Imagine there has been heavy snow fall. Imagine also that you had seen all the crevices and boulders on your way down, but the land is now devoid of a landmark, a flattened chaadar of virgin snow. But move you must, for that is the order, so how do you find the way, all the while shivering at the thought of a crevice gobbling you, throwing you down to a -200 degree pit from where none will ever hear your cries! During our trek, at every critical point on the glacier, a man fully dressed from head to toe in white, wind-shielding clothes, turned up. He guided us to the ladders across the crevices, took the correct turn at certain points, though there are no road maps or sign posts in this cold desert.

He was there when our team reached the mid point between two camps, where another like him was already there with a special ration of chocolates, juice, poori and jam. He would smilingly serve tea with the porters. He was the one who would start first from every point, but would immediately return if someone was left far behind, to help him find the way at these dangerous heights, where visibility often falls to a few feet. He is called the Link Commander, the omnipresent soldier who knows the way blindfolded. During the movements, when people climb up or down from posts, they are accompanied by these eyes and ears of the army.

Soldier Harpreet will get married in December and starts laughing once asked about his job. He is a Link Commander and is based at Camp 2. His area of responsibility is between half points of Camp 1 and Camp 3. Like any other Link Commander, his everyday journey starts much before others, because he has to be at the designated points much before others reach. When the civilian trekking team reached at the half point from Base Camp, Harpreet was waiting for us with juice and chocolates.

The link commander is there at every half point, where he reports to OP Baba, the soldier-saint, about the movement and seeks permission to move further. In our team, Lt Col AL Maini reported to OP Baba and then Harpreet gave his report and sought blessings and permission to move ahead. When I asked him about his responsibility, he first laughed for sometime and then said: “Sir, here every person is assigned a specific task. I don’t think I am doing anything special. If I had not done this, somebody else would.”

Theirs is a huge responsibility. Camp commanders keep precise information about every movement, as this decides the ration and place to sleep at night. There are four Link Commanders at every camp. Two move to half point for the higher camp and the other two to the lower camp half point. But for them, there is no half points on duty, for they must move all the time.

Hedge funds: loss in value

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Now that's a thorny hedge!

Goldman Sachs Investment Partners, a Goldman Sachs owned hedge fund launched in January this year, has lost close to $1 billion till September. The fund had close to $6 billion in assets under management. The loss is about 15% of its value. The average hedge fund lost roughly 19% in value this year, according to data from Hedge Fund Research. Most of the losses of the Goldman Sachs hedge fund came from investments in commodities, basic materials, metals, mining, energy and agriculture. The fund also faced losses from investments in convertible bonds and the fall of investment banks, which acted as prime brokers and lenders. Also, redemption pressures by clients have forced hedge funds to close their illiquid positions at a loss. In September alone clients withdrew a record $40 billion from hedge funds. Bans on short-selling are further adding to woes for hedge funds and consequently, for their investors.

An island in the ocean

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

“Why do you do yoga all the time? You want to live to be 150, isn’t it? Why? What would you do at 150… all alone while your friends, your loved ones, perhaps even your children and grand children have all gone? Not worth it!” Thus spake Kakoo (uncle) – let’s call him Dr Kakoo…

Dr Kakoo happens to be my favourite uncle in the neighbourhood and he’s seen me grow from the toddler who chased after a butterfly (which, incidentally, has nothing to do with being gay; I’m pretty sure I’ve seen Sir David Attenborough and Steve Irwin do pretty much the same thing on TV) into a professional gadfly. And ever since the time he suggested I might want to reconsider my decision of running away and joining the circus as a four-year-old, I’ve always found his advice timely and pertinent.

But this time, I begged to differ...

I was sitting in his living room, following up on an after dinner chat, while a replica of the Mona Lisa stared down at us from luminous white walls. He insisted that life was worth living only till about 80 (Kakoo’s in his 70s) or so and beyond that, it is but a listless wait for the end to come. And since reaching that limit, going by current gerontological standards, was a more likely statistical possibility than not amongst middle-class Indians, why bother with the mind-numbing stress of a workout for a few more years of life?

But that wasn’t all. Dr Kakoo had seen one of his aunts, a lovely loving lady, a kind pious soul, live long into her 90s. And he had seen the loneliness of her last decade which was spent mourning the loss of many who ought to have waited for her, but couldn’t… Whenever I met her, I was touched by the warmth and affection that seemed to cascade from her being, but what struck me most was the aura of quiet fortitude that seemed to envelop her. And in that sense Dr Kakoo is right. Longevity can be as much of a curse, as it is a boon. “ I don’t want to see what my aunt had to…”, he said, “And I don’t want to become a disfigured and worthless lump that is kept alive as a relic (a dynamic and successful intellectual, Kakoo has too much pride to allow himself to be reduced to that). I wish we could invent a tablet which once ingested, will ensure good health for the next decade or two and then on a random preset date (unknown to the individual), burst while asleep and euthanise us painlessly…”

‘You don’t need a tablet and you don’t need a preset date,’ I said. ‘Kakoo, don’t you think one could possibly be happy and healthy well into one’s ninth and tenth decade too? All the stuff I do is not so that I may live long, but so that no matter how long I live, I live healthy…’ Kakoo seemed willing to consider, and finding the iron hot, I told him what Kenshin, a Japanese tourist I’d met last year in Bharatpur, told me about a magical island between
