A latest research claims that circumcision has more benefits than earlier thought. Not only does it lower risk of HIV infection but also cuts risk of herpes and human papillomavirus!

Sex rarely gets a mention without stirring up a controversy, perhaps because no other subject captures the imagination of so many – across cultures and across geographies. But what has possibly caused the greatest noise around the world, apart from the issue (rather the non-issue) of virginity, is the alarming incidence of HIV and AIDS, a killer disease that inflicts millions and kills thousands across the globe each year. While sex itself has been the subject of much deliberation, thanks to the numerous beliefs (cultural and religious), associated with it, there is another controversial area which has the world divided about its pros and cons, with many who swear by it, and those who oppose it and dismiss it, and that is – circumcision. Circumcision for long has been touted as a potential prevention tool against the spread of HIV as well as other Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs); but a new study claims that circumcision might, in fact, diminish the chances of contacting two more common incurable STDs. The study (two randomised controlled trials), in which 5,534 men were involved in Uganda, claims that those who were circumcised as adults were 25 per cent less likely to get the herpes infection and as much as 30 per cent less likely to catch human papillomavirus (HPV) than their uncircumcised peers. It should be noted that researches conducted earlier have concluded that circumcision can reduce by as much as 60 per cent a man’s chances of catching an HIV infection.

More strangely, around 50,000 voters were declared felons during the election, of which half were African-Americans and thus were not allowed to vote. Majority of them were not actually felons and were eligible to vote. A survey by John McLaughlin & Associates estimated the number of voters who also did not vote due to inappropriate closing time of the polling booths was as high as 15,000. Moreover, several incidents of cancellation of votes due to voting machine failures, security issues, road blockages etc also hampered voting and greatly favoured Bush.

The US is also an example of an advanced democracy which had an unelected president to run their democratic country. Rudolph Ford Jr. suddenly became the Vice President for the first time under the terms of 25th Amendment two months after Spiro Agnew was forced to resign after a tax evasion charge. Incidentally Rudolph Ford Jr became the 38th president after Richard Nixon resigned as a result of Watergate scandal as recently as 1974.

All the big talks of elections being the backbone and the very fundamental of democracies notwithstanding, malpractices are increasingly becoming the fifth pillar of democracy. At this rate, democracy would increasingly lose its very right to criticise countries like China who refuse to repose faith in democracy. Yet at least China is honest with what it does and unlike the US does not take the excuse of creating a free world to invade Iraq for oil.

Madagascar faces an uncertain political future

In the African scheme of things, what is better than a coup d’état? A bloodless coup d’état! Watching the regime of Madagascar's ex-President, Marc Ravalomanana, come to an end was like sitting through a Sophocles tragedy in all its acts and nuances. In Madagascar, the protagonist – the king – deliberately turned a blind eye to the aspirations of his subjects and deaf to those aides who unsuccessfully tried to convince him that he was in deep mess.

Ravalomanana, too was warned in advance. But he didn't pay much heed. It is not that there was no case against the incumbent. He used his office to secure a near-monopoly of the dairy business in Madagascar and started to carve out an empire in tourism. In fact, the largest hotel in the country – constructed by the Chinese – was owned by him. That was too much for a nation, where 70% of its populace lives on less than $1 a day. But that does not necessarily mean that the power snatcher, Andry Rajoelina, had the mandate of the people. Experts believe that this ex-disco jockey is an untried leader who is too full of himself and is evidently disapproves of democratic establishments. At 34, he is full six years short of legal age for becoming President. Rajoelina, who doesn't even have two years of political exposure, led a rebellion in the capital Antananarivo that forced Ravalomanana to vacate office, after a majority of the army turned against him. “He is a non-starter. An upstart with little political experience; he also lacks the support of any political party,” says Stephen Ellis, an African affairs expert at the Free University Amsterdam, while talking to B&E. “With the exception of perhaps the metropolitan mob in Antananarivo, his support base is unsustainable,” adds Ellis. Meanwhile, the African Union and Southern African Development Community are firmly against the coup, and Washington has cut all non-humanitarian aid to Madagascar till the crisis is resolved

But then the financial system crumbled growth rates fell like a ton of bricks. The new democracies were shaken as expectations and confidence in democracy, the market economy, and the larger European project have suffered badly.

If this is allowed to continue, we might end up opening a Pandora’s Box, setting free the nationalistic and xenophobic ghosts of the past. Some of these democracies are very young and fragile. The optimism created by their peaceful return to a free and democratic Europe has been shattered to a degree that none of us could have foreseen. This is where political leadership is needed. The leaders of the well established European democracies must explain to their own voters that enlargement has greatly benefited them, and that it will also be to their benefit to share the responsibilities and costs of steering the hardest-hit countries through the crisis.

There were always exaggerated claims that bringing in the new members would be a costly affair. Any sober appraisal of what has actually happened since expansion would put the problems in perspective: when enlargement was agreed, the combined size of the ten new members’ economies roughly equaled that of the Netherlands. Today, after five years of much stronger growth among the newcomers, their combined GNP is somewhat smaller than that of the Benelux countries.

The key reason for this astonishing big size is relatively higher level of inefficiencies in the system, with lower average transportaion speeds, higher turnaround times at ports and high costs of administrative delays. The leaders at Samsung seem to be leading from the front in that regard, if the recent leadership change in Samsung is anything to go by. After a stint of two years as President and CEO of Samsung South West Asia, H. B. Lee has moved on. Lee, who was a major in Business Administration from Seoul National University, had a prior experience of 31 years at Samsung Electronics. Under his leadership, the company was able to flex its muscles in the LCD segment and also captured the number one spot in the colour laser printer category (the company itself claimed a market share of 30.9% market share in India in September 2008). He has been replaced by Jung Soo Shin as the President and CEO of Samsung South West Asia Operations. However, unlike Lee, Shin would be multi-tasking, as he would also take in the responsibility of CEO and President for Samsung India Electronics Ltd. (Lee had no direct executive position in SEIL).

And what to talk about the recent bloopers (and big ones at that) in his investment decisions. As B&E had reported much before, not many would have realised that the company had already begun 2008 with an unrealised $1.67 billion loss on its derivative contracts, and expectably further lost on the same. These derivatives, which are directly linked to overall markets and the credit health of companies, worsened further in Q3, 2008 and spelled disaster for Berkshire, thus leaving behind a mammoth loss of $2.21 billion.

The world famous Sigrid Rausing writes in the New Statesman this month, “The Committee to Protect Journalists estimates that at least 49 [journalists] have been killed in Russia since 1992. Only in Iraq and Algeria is it more dangerous to be a journalist... The FSB [Russian Federal Security Service], or rogue elements within it, ultra-nationalists, Chechen henchmen and corrupt mafia-style businessmen form a circle of violence.” Garry Kasparov, also a leading political heavyweight in Russia, wrote in the Wall Street Journal, “If you really wish to understand the Putin regime in depth... if you are in a real hurry to become an expert on the Russian government, [I can recommend you...] the DVD section, where you can find Mr. Puzo’s works on film. The Godfather trilogy is a good place to start, but do not leave out The Last Don, Omerta and The Sicilian.” Well, they certainly don’t mince their words!

Unless Putin cleanses this image and earns respect in global forums, it is quite evident that he and his coterie will only end up making Russia dramatically worse off once Putin is out of power, for Putin might be a patriot, but not the others necessarily. And the worse part of the whole story is, nobody knows who will really be Putin’s successor... What? What did you say? Medevedev? Med who?!?

The Tata group has several executives in their 60s, this lopsided scenario must change

The Tata Group, in my opinion has done a fairly good job over the years, in terms of succession planning. The various mature businesses of the group, which include steel, automotive and software services have nurtured leaders from within over the years and have groomed them for the top position. Though Ravi Kant himself was an external hire, Tata Motors has built a good leadership pipeline.

One of the areas where the group perhaps could have done a little better is in the area of fast tracking young leaders. In a lot of Tata Group companies, we have a situation now where several business heads are in their mid 60s. So their replacements are now being sought by the company from within.

Analysts reckon that his ‘constitutional coup’ was primarily because of Tata’s obsession to see through the Nano project to completion. By all yardsticks, the Nano should be on Indian roads by end of 2009 or early 2010, counting for all delays and overruns. Ratan Tata would then have achieved his dream to ‘secure’ his place in corporate history. Will he then seriously look for a successor? Or will he end up adopting the Vladimir Putin cum Hugo Chavez model of governance whereby he extends his reign further through ‘popular mandate’? Can ‘Chairman’ Ratan Tata become a ‘Managing Director’ with a hand picked nominee as ‘Chairman’ and rule from the shadows? Will that be healthy for the group’s future? Do remember, Ratan Tata said in an interview that he will not retire in a wheel chair. Do also remember, he is in excellent health for a 73-year-old. In that larger backdrop, the current imbroglio with three group company CEOs losing their chairs to the ‘65’ rule may seem like small change. But these companies are crown jewels of the Tata Group, and company insiders are yet to come up with conclusive answers to who may take up the job, which is unfortunate; given that the Tatas are supposed to be benchmarks for all that’s good with India Inc.
