Analysts reckon that his ‘constitutional coup’ was primarily because of Tata’s obsession to see through the Nano project to completion. By all yardsticks, the Nano should be on Indian roads by end of 2009 or early 2010, counting for all delays and overruns. Ratan Tata would then have achieved his dream to ‘secure’ his place in corporate history. Will he then seriously look for a successor? Or will he end up adopting the Vladimir Putin cum Hugo Chavez model of governance whereby he extends his reign further through ‘popular mandate’? Can ‘Chairman’ Ratan Tata become a ‘Managing Director’ with a hand picked nominee as ‘Chairman’ and rule from the shadows? Will that be healthy for the group’s future? Do remember, Ratan Tata said in an interview that he will not retire in a wheel chair. Do also remember, he is in excellent health for a 73-year-old. In that larger backdrop, the current imbroglio with three group company CEOs losing their chairs to the ‘65’ rule may seem like small change. But these companies are crown jewels of the Tata Group, and company insiders are yet to come up with conclusive answers to who may take up the job, which is unfortunate; given that the Tatas are supposed to be benchmarks for all that’s good with India Inc.
