Living in virtual worlds can be exciting and challenging. Anu Gulmohar assumes a spunky avatar and goes out to meet other avatars in virtual alleys

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Time to get real about virtual worlds

The prude in me made me walk out of that store with merely some fancy clothes and accessories, but I did find my way to some clubs. Fantastically created ambiences greeted me at every club I stepped into, which had plenty of thingamajigs that allowed you to make your avatar do the salsa, tango, belly dance etc and hug and kiss your partner. One of the clubs, Lara Beach Club, had posters of Aishwarya Rai, Mumtaz and Rajesh Khanna. Waqas Rau, co-owner of Lara Beach Club, boasted to me, “Lara Beach Club is now the biggest eastern club on SL with 1500+ members in only two months.” They’re not making any profits though, “I spend 50,000 L every month in running this club, but we’re only starting,” said Waqas. You can own lovely homes in such virtual worlds – complete with drapes, marble floors and chandeliers. I once, accidentally, teleported myself right into someone’s home, but thankfully the mistress of the house didn’t reproach me for the intrusion. Alicia told me that this house, which she shared with her SL husband and child, cost them 800 L per week. “My SL husband is my real life boyfriend since two years, but my daughter – I don’t know her in real life,” said Alicia, and so led me on to realise that SL has a number of adoption agencies. Here, children (in real life older than 18 years though – the minimum age required to register on SL) and parents wishing to adopt put up their profiles, and couples and children walk in and choose the people with whom they would like to build their virtual family. Disco Simons, owner of Kids Place Adoption Mall, believes that families in SL can become as precious as ones in real life. “Your feelings are real in this game as well. A lot of children come back to tell us how happy they are.” There are umpteen cities and communities in SL. To help me figure my way around, Ambassador Atlas had given me a number of landmarks to which I could teleport myself. “Violet is a small tightly knit community. Waterhead is vile and, at times, full of nihilistic twerps. Wengen is a small community of fun folks…” But the one place I was most excited at finding was Bollywood! A riot of colours and dome-shaped buildings greet you here. “Bollywood was the first Indian-themed island on Second Life. Since its launch in July 2007, it has grown to become one of the most popular hangout for Indians and others interested in Indian film and culture on Second Life,” says Siddharth Banerjee, founder & CEO of Indusgeeks Solutions P Ltd. “We realised early that it was important to invest in these worlds. Besides Bollywood, Indusgeeks also operates SLJobfinder.com, which is the largest employment service for virtual worlds like Second Life,” said Banerjee. Joni West from California is another entrepreneur who learnt early the possibilities SL presented to businesses. “I wound up establishing my own agency, This Second Marketing LLC, which brings real world clients into Second Life in an effective and relevant way. Our happy clients include Colgate, Nestle, IMAX, and CareerBuilder.com to name a few,” says Joni. On people investing in businesses in SL, Joni says, “There are thousands of people making more money from Second Life than they are paying to be there. A woman got famous by buying land early on and developed a housing project like a real world developer and reportedly made over a million real dollars in the real estate market. There are also some very successful clothing and furniture businesses. Pre-fab houses, body shapes, ‘skins,’ and animations are also lucrative businesses for those who take them seriously in Second Life.”

Commanding links

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

A few words on the men who can walk the terrain blindfolded

Imagine: at 18,000 feet, you have to reach the next post ahead with your team of four, to relieve the men at Qazi Post, at 22,000 feet. Imagine there has been heavy snow fall. Imagine also that you had seen all the crevices and boulders on your way down, but the land is now devoid of a landmark, a flattened chaadar of virgin snow. But move you must, for that is the order, so how do you find the way, all the while shivering at the thought of a crevice gobbling you, throwing you down to a -200 degree pit from where none will ever hear your cries! During our trek, at every critical point on the glacier, a man fully dressed from head to toe in white, wind-shielding clothes, turned up. He guided us to the ladders across the crevices, took the correct turn at certain points, though there are no road maps or sign posts in this cold desert.

He was there when our team reached the mid point between two camps, where another like him was already there with a special ration of chocolates, juice, poori and jam. He would smilingly serve tea with the porters. He was the one who would start first from every point, but would immediately return if someone was left far behind, to help him find the way at these dangerous heights, where visibility often falls to a few feet. He is called the Link Commander, the omnipresent soldier who knows the way blindfolded. During the movements, when people climb up or down from posts, they are accompanied by these eyes and ears of the army.

Soldier Harpreet will get married in December and starts laughing once asked about his job. He is a Link Commander and is based at Camp 2. His area of responsibility is between half points of Camp 1 and Camp 3. Like any other Link Commander, his everyday journey starts much before others, because he has to be at the designated points much before others reach. When the civilian trekking team reached at the half point from Base Camp, Harpreet was waiting for us with juice and chocolates.

The link commander is there at every half point, where he reports to OP Baba, the soldier-saint, about the movement and seeks permission to move further. In our team, Lt Col AL Maini reported to OP Baba and then Harpreet gave his report and sought blessings and permission to move ahead. When I asked him about his responsibility, he first laughed for sometime and then said: “Sir, here every person is assigned a specific task. I don’t think I am doing anything special. If I had not done this, somebody else would.”

Theirs is a huge responsibility. Camp commanders keep precise information about every movement, as this decides the ration and place to sleep at night. There are four Link Commanders at every camp. Two move to half point for the higher camp and the other two to the lower camp half point. But for them, there is no half points on duty, for they must move all the time.

Hedge funds: loss in value

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Now that's a thorny hedge!

Goldman Sachs Investment Partners, a Goldman Sachs owned hedge fund launched in January this year, has lost close to $1 billion till September. The fund had close to $6 billion in assets under management. The loss is about 15% of its value. The average hedge fund lost roughly 19% in value this year, according to data from Hedge Fund Research. Most of the losses of the Goldman Sachs hedge fund came from investments in commodities, basic materials, metals, mining, energy and agriculture. The fund also faced losses from investments in convertible bonds and the fall of investment banks, which acted as prime brokers and lenders. Also, redemption pressures by clients have forced hedge funds to close their illiquid positions at a loss. In September alone clients withdrew a record $40 billion from hedge funds. Bans on short-selling are further adding to woes for hedge funds and consequently, for their investors.

An island in the ocean

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

“Why do you do yoga all the time? You want to live to be 150, isn’t it? Why? What would you do at 150… all alone while your friends, your loved ones, perhaps even your children and grand children have all gone? Not worth it!” Thus spake Kakoo (uncle) – let’s call him Dr Kakoo…

Dr Kakoo happens to be my favourite uncle in the neighbourhood and he’s seen me grow from the toddler who chased after a butterfly (which, incidentally, has nothing to do with being gay; I’m pretty sure I’ve seen Sir David Attenborough and Steve Irwin do pretty much the same thing on TV) into a professional gadfly. And ever since the time he suggested I might want to reconsider my decision of running away and joining the circus as a four-year-old, I’ve always found his advice timely and pertinent.

But this time, I begged to differ...

I was sitting in his living room, following up on an after dinner chat, while a replica of the Mona Lisa stared down at us from luminous white walls. He insisted that life was worth living only till about 80 (Kakoo’s in his 70s) or so and beyond that, it is but a listless wait for the end to come. And since reaching that limit, going by current gerontological standards, was a more likely statistical possibility than not amongst middle-class Indians, why bother with the mind-numbing stress of a workout for a few more years of life?

But that wasn’t all. Dr Kakoo had seen one of his aunts, a lovely loving lady, a kind pious soul, live long into her 90s. And he had seen the loneliness of her last decade which was spent mourning the loss of many who ought to have waited for her, but couldn’t… Whenever I met her, I was touched by the warmth and affection that seemed to cascade from her being, but what struck me most was the aura of quiet fortitude that seemed to envelop her. And in that sense Dr Kakoo is right. Longevity can be as much of a curse, as it is a boon. “ I don’t want to see what my aunt had to…”, he said, “And I don’t want to become a disfigured and worthless lump that is kept alive as a relic (a dynamic and successful intellectual, Kakoo has too much pride to allow himself to be reduced to that). I wish we could invent a tablet which once ingested, will ensure good health for the next decade or two and then on a random preset date (unknown to the individual), burst while asleep and euthanise us painlessly…”

‘You don’t need a tablet and you don’t need a preset date,’ I said. ‘Kakoo, don’t you think one could possibly be happy and healthy well into one’s ninth and tenth decade too? All the stuff I do is not so that I may live long, but so that no matter how long I live, I live healthy…’ Kakoo seemed willing to consider, and finding the iron hot, I told him what Kenshin, a Japanese tourist I’d met last year in Bharatpur, told me about a magical island between

Dog gone!

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Yash Raj Film’s Roadside Romeo (incidentally Disney’s foray into Bollywood as well) will find it hard to even pass the quality test

In a world where Pixar sets the gold standard in animated films, Yash Raj Film’s Roadside Romeo (incidentally Disney’s foray into Bollywood as well) will find it hard to even pass the quality test. Both the animation and the story leave a lot to be desired and the only positive outlook for the movie is that it’s a pioneering effort at least in ho-hum Bollywood.

The story of a dog, Romeo (voiced by Saif Ali Khan) who was living the lavish life and suddenly finds himself on the mean streets of the city is clichéd to a fault. Romeo falls for Laila (Kareena Kapoor) who also happens to be the crush of bad dog Charlie Anna (Javed Jaffrey) and predictable mayhem follows. Jugal Hansraj’s direction relies too much on Bollywood lore (Yash Raj film scenes and dialogues are copied galore) and too little on character study. It is an earnest effort perhaps but if anyone thought animation didn’t need a story, they should ask the studio that made the animation movie event of the year, Wall–E.

The film hardly has any genuinely funny moments, and the background sets, though well detailed, lack punch. The redeemer is eventually Javed Jaffrey, the only one who seems to know how to voice an animation character. He brings out the quirks of Charlie Anna superbly to life and provides the few laughs there are in the film. The tepid songs and a basic background score do nothing to add to the appeal though. Ultimately, the gag reel during the end credits turns out to be funnier than the movie itself. And that’s saying a lot.

We get Rs 250 crore Central grant, and yet produce lesser IAS officers than Kerala Univ

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Minority Institution - Quality, not funds plague amu

Since 1947, the condition of all sections of Indian people has improved in absolute terms, but relatively speaking, Muslims have developed less than others. This issue needs to be addressed. Whereas universities in Kerala get Rs 125 crore annually from state and Central grants, AMU is the only university that gets Rs 250 crore. In spite of this, Kerala universities are producing more IAS officers and scientists than us.

This has many reasons. Their primary schooling is very good. Their old boys contribute generously to their alma mater. Punjab University receives little Central grant but gets generous contributions from their former students. We do not have Central funding problem, but we are not up to the mark. I think our old students can easily donate funds for areas which gets no government funding. In some cases, AMU does not accept funds from the government, especially when there are strings attached. We can create an endowment fund with the help of our old boys for our own interests and have a systematised monitoring mechanism put in place.

As for the minority character of AMU, it may connote a thousand meanings. In my view, the university has no minority character under Article 13 of the Constitution of India. In fact, a minority character can be harmful. Take for example the minority character of St Stephens College. A towering institution has been devastated in just three years because of its minority character. Even teachers at St Stephens are appointed by the narrow religious selection procedures. Patiala University and Guru Nanak Dev University in Punjab are not minority institutions, and they have no such problems.

As far as the feeling of insecurity and suspicion among Muslims is concerned, this has been created by the government. Therefore the government, not Muslims, must introspect and not take steps which are intransparent. The media should also be very careful. Doubtless, people in the Students Islamic Movement of India talk the language of lunatics. When they crossed the limit, they were banned. But the government and media should also ensure that they too do not cross the limits of law. None is above law. It is also important to note that communally sensitive situations have to be handled with a lot of care and consciousness.

Tendulkar, is truly a gem of a person.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

The great cricketer

TSI’s cover on Sachin was simply awesome. And Arindam Chaudhuri’s editorial was like an icing on the cake. The greatest Indian batsman of them all, Sachin Tendulkar, is truly a gem of a person. I truly wish that he keeps on sparking wild scenes of jubilation and setting India on course for victory. But I really feel sad and angry when people raise fingers at him. One must remember that Tendulkar has always come in when India has been in trouble. This is the magic of the man – what we in India take for granted. There is something that bit special – that extra buzz – about watching Tendulkar in full flight. He is 'the glorious centrepiece' of any stadium. And 'I am here to enjoy the game' – is what this man has to say. After reading his human acts, I bow to him. How many celebrities do that?

Russell Peters LoL!!!

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

He makes you laugh like it's only his business! Canadian-born Russell Peters, whose stand-up comedy routines are a sell-out in a matter of hours wherever in the world he be, is now performing in India. He, who spares no accent, no race, not even his Indian-origin parents in his shows, makes his best effort to be serious to Neha Sarin…

You hate Bollywood! Why?

I was born and grew up in Canada. My mom used to and still does watch Bollywood movies. It’s just not my thing. Part of it is the acting. Part of it is the lip-syncing. I can understand growing up here and liking it, but otherwise…

This is only your second show in India. Why so, when we have been your biggest fans and support..?

Well I didn’t know you were my biggest fans and support…

You crack loads of jokes on your dad…how did he react?

He passed away in 2004, but he used to say, “Here, I don’t bloody-well sound like that!”

Do comedians face a 'liquidity crunch' as well?

I think everybody faces liquidity crunches. I’m happy to say that I haven’t for the past four years now – but people don’t realise that even in 2003, I was pretty much just getting by; it was tight.

Like they say, it takes genius to create comedy, and madness to fuel genius. How much of Russell Peters is pure madness?

I don’t know if there’s any madness with me. I have my quirks like anybody else – but there’s no real madness.

Do you find George Bush’s actions funnier than yours?

It’s like watching a car accident. You know it’s going to happen, but you watch anyway.

Which of them is your biggest inspiration: Indians, Chinese, Amercians, Brits, Africans or Canadians?

I just talk about what I see, and since Indians and Chinese are the biggest populations in the world... and I live in North America, it just all comes together for me.

Which part of the world would you want to be reborn in?

I think that being born in Canada was the best place I could have been born and raised. If I was born anywhere else, even the States, I wouldn’t be who I am today.

How do white folks react to a brown man cracking jokes about them?

My audiences across Canada are completely mixed. It’s at least 60 to 75% white. I guess they like it the same way Chinese and Indian people like it.

How different is Russell Peters the man from Russell Peters the performer?

Offstage I’m just Russell. On-stage I’m Russell Peters.

Who is your favourite stand-up comedian?

George Carlin

Given the cultural differences, how different is performing in countries like India and UAE from being in US, for instance?

Well, that’s the thing. Everyone thinks they’re so different, but what I’ve learned and what most people respond to is that we’re all pretty much the same. We just do stupid things slightly differently.

Which daily routine of yours would you wish to be ‘outsourced’?

Having to get out of bed.

What time in the day are you serious?

Probably when I get up…

The new age Mozart

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Shy and unassuming - cliches that can't possibly describe genius...yet these words settle with ease around a certain AR Rahman, one of the greatest musical phenomena of our times. If one didn't know better, it is impossible to imagine the intense passion that inflames his rapturous music... Neha Sarin scratches the surface in search of the man behind the maestro...

You started with a whole new genre of music. Were you ever doubtful if it would work or get appreciated?

I was never doubtful as I was enjoying my association with the finest director (Mani Ratnam) of India. And if he liked it, I didn’t care if the others liked it or not, so I was making music from that point of view. He always encouraged me to come up with something different and original.

Which was the first instrument you picked up?

I started out with music when I was six and harmonium was the first instrument that I picked up. Music was not part of my family so I became serious about it only when I turned 18. It was not like it was my father’s business that I had to inherit, but other than that I simply enjoyed it.

Where do you derive your inspiration from?

It’s the boredom; the feeling that people have heard it and why do I need to give this to them again. So you decide to take a risk. And when you take a risk, that’s the thing what people like. I feel the daily inspiration comes only if you become a listener more than a composer. You have to be an appreciator (sic), if you cut that out, then you aren’t left with much.

Which do you happen to enjoy more – live performance or composing?

All…(grins)

What do you think about music makers who claim their music is only inspired and not copied?

Sometimes it is inevitable… Like in the west, they have people who analyze the music before it comes out, and I think we should have something similar too. They could very well go ‘oh, this song is too close to that one’, but it is difficult because when something comes in your heart, at times it could end up resembling something but you say, let me not stop, let me get it out and we can decide later if it’s good or not. There is so much of content everywhere and inevitably one little phrase could end up sounding familiar but you have to see the intent of the whole composition. And not just inspiration, sometimes it’s the commonality. For e.g. if I tune into a raga called Hemant, I’ll go to a certain note that has been used but that’s the law of that particular raga, so it’s confusing.

How do you rate contemporary music vis-à-vis that of yesteryears?

There are lot of good things and a lot of things that are hurried up and less passionate, but there a lot of factors. Music is sometimes dictated by the music company, producer or director. But I feel if people want to create music and they feel straitjacketed, then they should come up with an album of their own expressions. Now the possibility of doing that is higher.

What do you have to say on remixes?

There are some good remixes too, but the original composers have to be credited in a proper way.

A strong police force is a must

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

I tip my hat to Prasoon S Majumdar for the write-up “Private Police” (TSI Oct 12) which pokes fun not only at the laxity of the governments but also at the inhuman affairs of the men in khaki uniform. An integrated strong police force is the most treasured possession of the nation. But the inaction of the state governments in filling the vacancies and thrusting the police personnel to overwork is a sign that the nation is in the snare of secession, racialism, communalism and many such other heinous crimes. It is relatively less expensive to add the required staff to the police force than to pay the price for lax security arrangement. But behind this stark reality, there is a crying shame which unravels the anguish of the innocent victims under police custody. It is quite ignominious that sometimes the naïve people fall prey to police brutality. For instance, the policemen, called the saviours of the people, at times turn to be the perpetrators of rape to the utter amazement of humanity. So, in such a crucial juncture, fair and square policing system would be a great relief to the people. Moreover, when the lackluster attitude of the governments is taken into account, the trivial matters tackled by private police can certainly strengthen security.

“In Delhi, 60% of the city don’t even have sewers”

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Prof Vijay Kumar Malhotra is BJP's chief ministerial candidate in the coming Delhi Assembly polls. He talks to TSI’s Anil Pandey about his party’s plans for Delhi if voted into power.

What is your campaign agenda for the coming Delhi elections?

The main issue will be Delhi’s development. In the ten years the Congress has held the reins, the Capital has been hit by water and power shortages. The roads are bad and there is nothing like law and order. Crimes against women are on the rise and the city has become a haven for terrorists. Note the number of blasts that have taken place during Congress rule. Also, the Yamuna was never so polluted and even basic civic facilities are unavailable in the unauthorised and slum colonies.

What sort of development blueprint do you have?

Once in power, we will solve the water and electricity crisis, clean up the Yamuna and take special steps to make commuting a pleasure. We will set up more power plants and resume the stalled work on the Babana project. For water, we will ask Haryana and Uttar Pradesh to give us our share.

What is your Yamuna clean-up strategy?

The clean Yamuna project has been a flop. We have spent Rs 1,800 crore to clean the river and yet the pollution level has just kept rising. We will set up plants to treat the polluted water that comes through the nallahs and ensure that Haryana stops dumping toxic waste in the Yamuna. And if they don’t heed us, we will approach the Supreme Court.

What are you doing for the slums and other unauthorised colonies?

My first priority will be to authorise them. Nearly 50 lakh people reside in these colonies and clusters. Our aim is to build flats for the slum-dwellers.

What do you think is Delhi’s biggest problem and how do you hope to solve it?

We need to redo the Master Plan, which is at the root of Delhi’s problems. It was framed in a hurry. Under the Aam Maphi Yojna, we will offer rebate for constructions up to a certain period; thereafter, the Master Plans will be implemented strictly.

Thousands of labourers are expected to pour into Delhi during the 2010 Commonwealth Games. And they are not going to leave the city after the Games. How will you cope with this extra pressure?

The labourers are not coming from outside Delhi. They are mostly unemployed Delhiites, and the contractors will take care of migrant labour. In the last ten years, 4.5 lakh unemployed workers registered themselves, but only 1,300 got jobs.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit wants to make Delhi like Paris. What is your dream?

(Laughs) I have no idea about the CM’s Paris. What I do know is that in this Paris, 60 per cent of dwellers don’t even have sewers. I won’t make Delhi like Paris, but I would very much like to make it the world’s best city.

Will your government extend the BRTC corridor further?

It wasn’t so much the people, as the contractors of the Congress who benefited from the BRTC. Traffic snarls continue, and it can take up to three hours for people to reach their offices. The truth is that there wasn’t enough planning for the construction of flyovers. Once in power, we will scrap the BRTC and build new roads and flyovers to make commuters’ lives easier.

It is said the BJP will benefit the most should the BSP decide to enter the poll fray …

We will certainly benefit from it. The BSP will eat into some of our votes, but the Congress will be the biggest loser because Muslims are unhappy with them. And they will certainly vote for the BSP.

In what ways will the factionalism in the BJP’s Delhi unit affect the party’s performance?

There is no factionalism. We are all working together.

Will the party distribute tickets to youth?

In the mayoral elections, 80 per cent of the tickets went to the youth. It will be no different this time.

As chief minister how do you plan to deal with the Afzal Guru file that is lying with the current incumbent?

I will forward it to the Centre on the very first day and request that he be hanged

They claimed that the state had developed a drug that could raise a person’s height and was recruiting people to receive the new treatment.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

“What’s troubling you? You look very distressed,” I said to my friend. “Well, I’m OK, I guess . . . but I’ve done a terrible thing. An abhorrent thing.” “What do you mean? You aren’t a bad person.” His eyes welled with tears. “I have made cripples out of normal, healthy people and sent them away for good,” he said. “It is inhumane, what I have done. I shall never be able to hold my head up again.”

My friend, a well-connected physician at the time, told me that he had been ordered by the Communist Party to pick out the shortest residents of Pyongyang and South Pyongan province. Against his conscience, he went out to those areas and had local party representatives distribute propaganda pamphlets. They claimed that the state had developed a drug that could raise a person’s height and was recruiting people to receive the new treatment. In just two days, thousands gathered to take the new drug.

My friend explained how he picked out the shortest among the large group. He told the crowd that the drug would best take effect when consumed regularly in an environment with clean air. The people willingly, and without the slightest suspicion, hopped aboard two ships – women in one, men in the other. Separately, they were sent away to different uninhabited islands in an attempt to end their “substandard” genes from repeating in a new generation. Left for dead, none of the people made it back home. They were forced to spend the rest of their lives separated from their families and far from civilization. “I can hardly believe that I’ve done such a terrible thing,” he told me.

My friend, who still lives in North Korea, will spend the rest of his days tormented with guilt. At the same time, he did not forget to beg me over and over that this incident was a state secret and that I was not to tell a soul, not even my wife. I kept his secret for some 16 years. There seems little point now in protecting a party, a government, and a leader that failed to do the same for its people.

witness to history

In late June, the US took the dramatic and highly symbolic step of removing North Korea from its list of state sponsors of terrorism. As one component of the ongoing six-party talks to encourage North Korea to give up its nuclear programme, the trade-off doesn’t seem so bad. But a lack of hard evidence doesn’t mean something isn’t true. Although the current chatter revolves around Kim Jong Il’s possible ties to a nascent Syrian nuclear programme, one episode from 25 years ago reminds me of the very real dangers the North Korean regime poses to international stability.

A bright former student of mine had risen to become a high-ranking official in the Central Party’s Department of Propaganda and Agitation. One day in October 1983, he invited me and two other professors to his home for dinner. He lived in a luxury apartment complex for officials of the Central Party with the rank of director or above, where he shared a unit with his son, himself a special reporter for the official North Korean news agency. All of a sudden, as we were in the middle of dinner, our host’s son ran into the room out of breath.
