Can creativity be taught? Can it be learned? Is creativity enhancement possible? In business is it possible to distinguish between cosmetic creativity and impactive creativity? Why aren’t we all naturally and consistently creative? The book Business Creativity has answers for all these questions and then some more. Arthur Gogatz, Associate Professor at the ICN Graduate School of Business, University of Nancy, France, Visiting Professor at the City University of Hong Kong and the National Economics University, Hanoi, Vietnam; and Reuben Mondejar, Associate Professor at City University of Hong Kong, a regular commentator and analyst on CNBC, Star TV Asia, BBC and CNN, have delicately blended 12 invisible barriers which stall creative thinking with contemporary meaning of keywords in the context of creative thinking, interesting anecdotes, adaptable exercises and quotes from the works of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, its sequel Through the Looking Glass, Richard Farson’s Management of the Absurd, Silvano Arieti’s Creativity; The Magic Synthesis, Richard Walter’s Screenwriting and Desmond Morris’ The Human Zoo.
We all know what we ought to be doing. What we ought to be doing is usually what we most want to do. The problem lies in finding the courage to start. Creating anything is not easy. A blank sheet of paper, a virgin canvas, a lump of clay, it is all not easy. You decide what words to put to the page. You decide which images to put on the canvas. You decide what form the clay should take. You decide what project to start, what product to launch, alter, relaunch. Before you begin, it all seems so overwhelming. The hard part is to begin, and then the hardest part is to keep going, because to keep going you have to justify your meagre results to yourself and all others involved.
Creative thinking teaches us to defer the automatic ‘no’ we use to deflect everything new. By turning the ‘no’ into a ‘maybe’, we make sure that we’ve considered the idea not only from our perspective, but also from every perspective. If we can do that, we are well on the road to creativity. A plumber in Nottingham, England submitted a design for a tank to the British War Office in 1911.
