POLAND FORCEPoll brings prosperity finally

Election has always been important landmark for Poland, especially after separating itself from Soviet Union in 1989. It is generally termed as a historic battle between light and dark, and finally it has succeeded to bring egalitarian regime in 90s, when Communism collapsed, across the Eastern Province. But the land had always been in limbo. The dilemma of nationalism and closer ties to the EU. Thus, the recent election was very important to purge the limbo and decide what people want.

Poles have always fought for peace. Though, Poland regained its independence in 1918, but Nazi Germany controlled it till the end of World War II, followed by USSR. Among the countries involved in the WW II, Poland lost highest percentage of citizens. Over six million perished, half of them being Jews. However, Poland has recuperated steadfastly and become a successful nation to bring economic prosperity and social upliftment to its citizens.

Poland has for decades been a serious bone of contention between USSR & the NATO bloc. Yet its joining of the NATO not only strengthened both Poland and pro-market ideology but was also a death blow for Russia. Poland was followed by many other Warsaw Pact countries to join NATO and even send soldiers to Iraq, much to the dismay and discomfort of Russia who too has been on a spree in the recent past to get back its lost turf. Yet the election of Donald Tusk put at rest all the dilemmas of Poland playing far greater role with the framework of the European Union in the near future. For western Europe, Poland has always been a test case. If Poland becomes successful to get counted among the most successful nations of the EU, then it would not only give impetus to the expansion of the EU but would inspire other Warsaw Pact countries to follow suit. At a time when influence of France & Spain is declining, this country has the best chance to be the next flag bearer of Europe.

Banishing all hopes of peace to ‘no man’s land’

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

We know what administrations have said publicly. They have rejected anything remotely of the sort, ever since 1976, when the US vetoed a Security Council resolution calling for a two-state settlement on the international border (the Green Line). By now virtually the entire world agrees on the two-state international consensus, along the lines almost agreed upon at Taba. That includes all Arab states, Iran, Hamas and even its most militant figure, Khaled Meshal, in exile in Syria. Israel has consistently rejected this consensus, which US backs fully. Rejectionism is supported by actions on the ground: settlement programs, the annexation wall, closures, check points and much worse.

Just one example: Israel has just confiscated more Arab land to build a bypass road for Palestinians to “push the Palestinian traffic between Bethlehem & Ramallah deep into the desert and effectively bar (Palestinians) from the central part of the West Bank,” part of the E-1 development project, east of Jerusalem, designed in effect, to bisect the West Bank, according to the Israeli peace organization Gush Shalom. “With such policies enacted by the government, the famous Annapolis Conference is emptied of all meaning, long before it convenes.”

No realistic proposal has been advanced that does not take a two-state settlement at least as a starting point, along the general lines of Taba. Informal negotiations followed, leading to several detailed proposals, applauded by most of the world but dismissed by the “boss-man called partner,” as Israeli political analyst Amir Oren describes the US-Israel relationship. In the coming weeks & the longer term, there is plenty of educational and organizing work to be done. It won’t be easy. It never is. But much harder tasks have been accomplished with dedicated and persistent effort.

The difference, if any, between the two manufacturers remains marginal.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

wait for game-set-match!

However, the game is far from over as Boeing has been known to falter in the recent past. On October 24, 2007, analysts realised that there was a revenue shift from 2008 into 2009 for Boeing, which meant that the company had lowered its expected revenues for 2008 by 5%. Explains Fraiser, “The current delays would lower revenues by $3.5 billion and further ones would push revenues out.” After the successful A380 launch, the Airbus’ camp exudes an aroma of confidence. Concludes Vetrivel, “The difference, if any, between the two manufacturers remains marginal. The yearly orders and deliveries are likely to remain stable at about 45:55 in favour of Boeing for some length of time to come.”

Sure enough, the war to dominate global skies is not over. Both Boeing and Airbus may have won a few skirmishes here, or a few battles there. But both have survived, even thrived in short periods. Now, as the market shifts to a different and higher level, as airlines across the world clamour to place huge orders, especially in Asia-Pacific & South Asia, the intensity and decibel levels are reaching feverish pitch. As we see it from here, it is a clear case of an aircraft for an aircraft and an order for an order.

We are fortunate that he has succeeded each time.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Manmohan singh #. Manmohan singh

He is India’s most highly educated Prime Minister till date and allegations of kowtowing to 10 Janpath apart, Dr. Manmohan Singh is admired by millions of Indians for his intellectual depth and untarnished personal integrity.

Sr. Congress leader, Salman Khursheed on the Indian PM’s admirable qualities

“Dr. Singh is a dream and a dreamer. Being good is often thought to be a great disqualification in Indian politics. He is proved that to be false. Not only that, he’s also proved that professional merit and intellectual brilliance still count for something in our country’s otherwise insipid political culture. Politics with principles is not easy and his own career has brought out this reality several times. We are fortunate that he has succeeded each time. He never allows his vast intellect to intimidate, and unassumingly gives gentle comfort to the most modest of souls. The mistake that ordinary politicians make is to think that his gentleness can be overawed by pressure. Behind that gentle veneer is a solid faith and courage of conviction. If political opponents have not noticed this, I can only feel sorry for them for they might discover this in trying circumstances.”

it’s clear that what Bharti Airtel has managed to achieve in over 12 years

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Bharti Airtel adds that the company is now pursuing a three pronged strategy for the rural India attack, namely affordability, reach and simplifying the tariff plans

The 800 million bait

“Both RCOM and Manoj Kohli, CEOAirtel do not have a very dense presence in C-circles, which is the next big telecom opportunity. Both need to ramp up their rural act,” avers Gupta. He is bang on. With metros and urban areas reaching saturation levels, the estimated 800 million rural target audiences are the key. And in line with their respective visions to be the number one guy in the Indian telecom space, both Anil and Sunil are actively straddling the rural horse.

In this segment, however, Mittal presently has an upper hand, given that Airtel was present in all 23 circles much before RCOM even woke up to the telecom opportunity. A visibly elated Mittal told 4Ps B&M that, “Years back, we went for expansion that I believe has been the most important factor for our rural plans.” Manoj Kohli, CEO, Bharti Airtel adds that the company is now pursuing a three pronged strategy for the rural India attack, namely affordability, reach and simplifying the tariff plans. “We are using the elasticity of the market in our favour by clubbing affordability with simplicity. I see this as a very important strategy for us going forward,” Kohli told this magazine, revealing that the company plans to invest $2.5 billion in FY09 to increase its penetration in far flung areas. Slashing call rates to entice rural consumers, forming a JV company with IFFCO to offer customised mobile services to a target base of 55 million farmers, are just among a few of Mittal’s flurry of recent initiatives in this direction.

So far as monthly subscriber additions are concerned, Airtel is growing the fastest in C-circles, stumping even state-owned BSNL with its aggressiveness. As per COAI, in 2007, Airtel added 37,21,816 subscribers in C-circle as opposed to BSNL’s 7,51,328. Sunil Bharti Mittal told 4Ps B&M, “There was a time when politicians who had to roam in far-flung areas used to keep a separate BSNL number for roaming. We knew that if we had to remain number one then we had to go beyond BSNL and I am pleased to inform that today we have actually achieved that. Our coverage today, goes much further than any other provider.” In fact, almost 35-36% of Airtel’s net additions are coming from rural areas, with distribution being another key focus area. “Going forward, Airtel sim cards and recharge vouchers will be available in all shops that sell something as basic as a matchbox,” explains Kohli.

Davids, you’re history

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Conclusions of CC are detrimental to competition in the UK retail sector. Or are they?

For those UK grocery who think that foreign retail giants are feared only in India, here’s an afterthought. They are feared in their own backyard as well! After a series of allegations, the Competition Commission (CC) of UK was asked to prepare a report on Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury and Morrison’s. In its 269 page report, CC has cleared the big four British supermarkets of allegedly cornering small retailers and forcing them to shut down.

Allegations were rife that these retail giants were hoarding empty lands so that they don’t face competition from other players. The primary cause of disdain was that suppliers had suspected that the concerned supermarkets were taking supplies from them on their own conditions in the absence of other options. This was the third inquiry ordered against retailers, lately.

Post completion of the inquiry, CC concluded that, “whilst UK grocery retailers are, in many respects, delivering a good deal for consumers, action are needed to improve competition in local markets and address relationships between retailers and their suppliers.” The only pro-customer aspect of the findings was the decision by CC to set-up an ombudsman or watchdog to look into areas of concern. Peter Freeman, Chairman, CC said that, “Changes to the existing Code of Practice… aim to improve the existing system by making it more proactive in tackling those practices, which can damage investment by suppliers.”

This has not gone well with retailers. British Retail Consortium Director General Stephen Robertson opines, “It is crucial that any new legislation does not damage customers by adding to costs and hampering the successful competition…” BRC is criticising recommendations for an ombudsman to rule on retailers’ relationships with suppliers saying that as the Commission has found no evidence of failure in these relationships, there can be any justification for a multi-million pound quango which would ultimately be paid for by customers. Since there are no clear guidelines on how this ombudsman will function or what the involved costs will be, it is impossible to work out the exact cost-structure and potential impact. Rosalind Plant seconds BRC, “We are not sure the main recommendations will improve the life of the British consumer.” Sir Terry Leahy, CEO, Tesco also voiced a similar opinion by saying that, “We believe it would take away power from consumers to choose where they shop.”

The report might have suggested many things or may intend many things, but it’s not doing what it was supposed to do, protecting small players. Its recommendation may facilitate competition between giants but it does nothing for small retailers as all the suggested measures were given on basis of market shares held by each retailer, which defies its purpose. Unless something concrete is done, small retailers will have to bow out of the race.

When reverse is the way forward!

Web portals go for an offline stint...

Emergence of Indian Internet the BRIC economies is extending a new meaning to the way the businesses are run and marketed around the globe. As the Indian Internet economy grows further and number of Internet users increase from the present figure of 60 million, web portals require a judicious mix of online and offline presence to cater to the new markets.

Most of the web portals have prepared a blueprint to have a significant offline presence in the B2Cand B2B segments. For instance, makemytrip.com has traversed into the offline market by arranging networking groups to help attract the consumer base.

But why do these companies need to chart out an offline presence? “Basically to reach to the larger consumer who might not necessarily be a computer literate, or who could not afford a online access,” says Sumeet Singh, National Head, Marketing, Info Edge Ltd. Jeevansathi.com, a product of Info edge had started an offline center in Lucknow this month. Acting as a match point, these centres have trained counselors to address the concerns of those visiting on the centres on their service. The company expects to have around 25-30 match points in the country in next 6 months.

Interestingly, these portals are spending heavily in the offline advertisement and marketing efforts in order to increase clicks on their websites. “The response has been excellent so far,” says Abdul Sattar, a Relationship Manager, Makemytrip, Hyderabad which has posted a 180% growth last year. “Advertising in newspaper, organising a B2B meet up/ interactions to help enhance the trust with the consumer that essentially boost the future online market,” has been the strategy with this travel portal. “As the language is a barrier with most of the customers who go online, a one-on-one interaction helps the consumer to reach and appreciate our services confidently unlike online,” says Abul Sattar.
