Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee was asked to officiate while Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is recuperating. How well, in your view, did he acquit himself?
Pranabda is the senior most minister in Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's Cabinet and has vast experience of both the organisation and the government. And this is precisely why he was asked to preside over the Cabinet during the PM's illness. Indeed, he not only did a great job at home; he even took time out to fly over to Sri Lanka.
It is being said that while the Prime Minister was undergoing treatment at the AIIMS, several names were discussed. Is it true that Pranab Mukherjee's name led the rest?
These are all opposition canards spread by the media. If you remember, Pranabji himself had said that there was no need for an officiating PM – but that, being the senior-most in the Cabinet, he would follow the tradition and preside over its meetings. This is exactly the arrangement we have each time the Prime Minister goes on a foreign visit. The senior most minister presides over the Cabinet.
