St. Croix, the biggest of them all, clings to the Buck Island Reef, the unique United States National Monument, which is underwater. The reef’s two major underwater trails – Turtle Bay Trail and East End Trail, can be explored through numerous boats which operate off the dock in Christiansted. It also has a cautiously restored Fort, built in 1774, to protect the town's harbour which has intriguing and photogenic battlements and dungeons to allure tourists.
With the islands greeting over 2 million visitors a year, tourism is the primary economic activity. Hovensa, one of the world''s largest petroleum refineries, is also located on this multi-facet isle. Mother Nature has its own way of detoxifying these unexploited Virgin Islands by making the islands prone to tropical storms and hurricanes. In recent history, substantial damage was caused by Hurricane Hugo in 1989 and Hurricane Marilyn in 1995. Due to colonisation of the islands by the Spanish, Dutch, British, French, Knights of Malta, Danish and American, it enjoys a multi-cultural heritage which is reflected even throughout their 18th-century architecture. America has deliberately chosen to ignore the islands as one finds hillsides and foliage as lush and abundant as the day Christopher Columbus first arrived at the Virgins more than 500 years ago; the US Virgin Islands have endured the tests of time and escaped the seemingly inevitable negatives of civilisation.
