Our unsung heroes
Prasoon’s write-up on martyrdom and recognition was apt (TSI, May 11-17). Not many people realise that there has been dissatisfaction in the manner gallantry and distinguished service awards have been made. The 26/11 fighters deserve praise and gallantry awards for their brave acts. But didn’t our paramilitary soldiers who fight day and night equally deserve that too? Our young men in the armed forces, police, irrespective of their ranks, are motivated by the highest ideals of nationalism and patriotism, being ready to sacrifice their lives beyond the call of duty. To them it is immaterial whether their deeds cost them their lives or cause immeasurable grief to their family. If such a noble sacrifice is not recognised, then it’s a shame for us as we don’t have any other incentive for these unsung heroes of our nation. This does not mean that every soldier or a policeman has to be decorated with medals. But the system should ensure that exceptional bravery and courage is recognised. Sadly, now a days medals, promises and assurances given are hardly honoured – thanks to red tapism and an unconcerned bureaucracy.
