2,300 IIPM students get jobs
This time too the media, all except Total TV and a psephologist, were off their mark in the exit polls, reports Onkareshwar Pandey
In a maze of inaccurate election predictions, Delhi-based Total TV got it the closest. In its exit poll beamed after the final round of polling on May 13, it prophesized 195 seats for Congress and 131 seats for BJP in the Lok Sabha elections.
For contrast, CNN-IBN gave 153 to Congress and 143 to BJP; Star News -Nielsen put the Congress number at 157 and BJP at 154 while India TV said Congress was expected to win 152 seats and the BJP 143. (see graphic)
The final result: Congress 206, BJP 116.
On February 17, the Election Commission had imposed a blanket ban on publishing results of exit polls and opinion polls beginning 48 hours before voting till the end of all phases of the election.
On May 13, Total TV ran its programme Mood of India. Recalls Umesh Joshi, executive producer, Total TV: ``It was the first time that we did a real opinion poll on camera. Even though the panelists did not agree with our conclusions, our Editor-in-Chief and Director, Vinod Mehta, declined to change figures. In the end, we proved to be the most accurate of them all.’’
All the high flyers and their accents notwithstanding, it were Total TV and a lone psephologist who got it right when results began trickling in on May 16. When Today’s Chanakya forecasted 185 seats, plus or minus 11, for the Congress, he found no takers for his numbers. Apart from some intrepid journalists, it certainly surprised the political class, coming as it did a few days before the exit polls.
Chanakya’s forecast went on air on the Live India channel on May 13, along with other exit polls, all of which showed a lower tally for the Congress.
