Musharraf cussedly clings to his uniform merely to save his skin in the wake of electoral defeat
In Pakistan, it is becoming increasingly difficult to say who, between the Musharraf administration & the Opposition, is capable of demonstrating a higher degree of political gaucherie. While, the ruling regime’s obduracy is centred on President Musharraf’s insistence on perpetuating himself in power, Opposition parties seems to have lost the plot completely. Meanwhile, President General Musharraf told Pakistan Supreme Court this week that he will quit the Chief of the Army Staff’s post, only if he’s re-elected as President of Islamic Republic of Pakistan. As expected, the statement was immediately rejected by the Opposition. Opposition’s lawyers told the apex court not to accept the undertaking on grounds of Musharraf’s “unreliability” on matters relating to hanging his uniform. However, dismissing all doubts, the Supreme Court cleared Musharraf to fight elections while being in uniform.
The electoral commotion in Pakistan is gaining momentum as the D-day is fast approaching. “The lawmakers, who should seek remedy to political issues through Parliament, are rushing towards the Supreme Court for every conceivable relief in their present struggle against President Musharraf. That is the biggest irony of Pakistan,” says Ashraf Mirza, noted political analyst from Pak Observer, while talking to B&E. In current political bedlam in Pakistan, various political parties are playing their role in trying to form & unseat the present regime in Pakistan. The most active & alert in this respect are: — Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal, Tehrik-e-Insaaf, Muttahida Qaumi Movement, Pakistan Muslim League-Q, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) & PML-N.
Interestingly, irrespective of the political manoeuvres by Opposition, the ruling Muslim League alliance has the majority required to get Musharraf re-elected for another term. As far as Musharraf is concerned, his insistence on holding two offices is primarily based on the assessment that if he quits army, he would lose hold over his political wing, the Pakistan Muslim League (Qaid) and also the command of the army – a proposition too dangerous for his personal well-being.
Pakistan’s dilemma is that it is neither a full-fledged dictatorship nor a democracy, just as its leader and the head is neither an officer nor a gentleman politician. The army law certainly debars the general from participating in any political activity, similarly the country’s constitution also does not permit the head of the state to hold dual offices. But Musharraf, the true dictator, is hardly bothered about petty legal issues. His only concern is to remain in power by hook or by crook. And he will eventually achieve this by rounding up the opponents; rigging the elections with impunity; manipulating the Bush Administration & by hoodwinking the Pakistani people.
