Making sense of a mammoth of a menace, Whatever it might be one thing is clear, Elephantiasis will soon be going the way of the Woolly Mammoth.

http://www.businessandeconomy.org/18102007Mosquitoes are always up to no good, when they are not sucking our blood, buzzing in our ears (sometimes noses) and merrily passing the plasmodium bacteria to us, which incidentally causes malaria; they are also making us ‘fat’! I’m talking about Elephantiasis. No..no, this is not a term of reference for Adnan Sami look-alikes, this is a real disease which affects about 130 million people in 73 countries.

Caused by a parasitic worm which may lie dormant in the human body for years before serious symptoms are detected, this disease is also one of the most disfiguring ones out there with victims often difficult to recognise owing to grotesque deformities manifesting on the face. Prevalent mainly in African countries owing to lack of proper medical facilities allows this terrible affliction to continue unabated and untreated. The root-cause for the horrible disfigurement is the blockage of lymph-nodes in the body which in turn leads to swelling of the muscle tissue to unimaginable proportions. A typical victim of the deadly virus would have his arms, legs, face swollen to twice, sometimes thrice their size. This leads to the skin being folded and warped, leading to additional skin diseases which can even cause death in some cases. Another very painful side-effect is endured by its sufferers—swelling of the genitals—yes, it’s as painful as it sounds, besides also leading to ‘loss of function’.

Now however, help is at hand. Scientists in the UK and US have mapped the genome of the worm, Brugia malayi, which causes the disease. It is hoped that additional light will be shed on the intricate workings of the worm–how it functions, infects and spreads, etc. It is also hoped that a vaccine could be developed in the future to completely eradicate this menace forever. Although some critics point out that cheap yet effective drugs, which incidentally have successfully combated the worm in Asia and elsewhere are available but not being used. The reasons for this irregularity aren’t clear, maybe it’s just the bureaucracy working at its ‘elephantine’ pace!! Whatever it might be one thing is clear, Elephantiasis will soon be going the way of the Woolly Mammoth.
