Perhaps, the greatest achievement of the last century is emergence of democracy. There are almost 140 countries for which democracy is the way of their polity. Reversely, there are few countries where democracy remains a distant dream. Unfortunately, Burma is one of them. The country is going through a miserable journey of hope & despair under the military rule since its Independence in 1948 from British rule & hopelessly struggling to bring egalitarianism regime. But, possibility became more challenging when popular politician like Aung San Suu Kyi was imprisoned. In addition, the military government jailed over 1,300 politicians. Though, the country held free election for the first time in 1990 after 30 years, where Aung San Suu Kyi won 392 seats out of 489 but, it was banned by the regime. Government has never shown regard for people in the society. It exampled the crudest form of command economy. Human rights watch has unveiled that child as young as seven are forced to carry army supplies. It has over 70,000 children amongst its 350,000 army personnel. The horrific army abuses are more on ethnic minorities. Thus, it’s futile to expect change from within. It’s high time for the world order to act. If Iraq was a fit case for the likes of the US then for what reason the Burmese dictators are being spared?
