Police unfit to combat terror
Philanthropist George Soros has once said, “Crime requires police work, not military action”, but then, Indian seems to be playing its own flute. It is no wonder to guess the capability of Indian police equipped with two feet long batons & a whistle at best with a loaded gun that can only be triggered after orders from top. The fact is, the country has huge dearth of police personnel. Corroborating it, is the fact that police to people ratio is merely 10 for 10,000 persons while countries like Hong Kong, Malaysia & Thailand have a ratio of 47, 34 & 33, respectively. With crimes in mega-cities increasing exponentially, police patrol & investigation are declining. Moreover, resources are limited and are far behind in reaping the benefits of the modern technology. Other reports depict more horrifying pictures. Out of total available police force, 55% are engaged in VIP’s security, or supervising rallies, 3.6% are involved in managing traffic & merely 32% are in active policing in Delhi. By this one can gauge the condition of other cities. India as a nation should learn fast enough that merely guarding the borders doesn’t necessarily secure a nation. Unless major structural reforms are introduced, India’s internal security nightmare would doom its future.
